Gilbert "Gil" F. Witzke, 83, of Oshkosh, died on Monday, July 12, 2010 at Evergreen Retirement Community. He was born in Oshkosh on March 25, 1927 the son of William and Lydia Hoeppner Witzke. Gil married Dorothy Hughes on December 23, 1970 in Oshkosh.
Gil was a master electrician, establishing Witzke Electric Inc in November of 1957. It continues to be the oldest family owned electrical business in Oshkosh. Gilbert was a member of First United Methodist Church, and was a member of the Masonic Lodge 27 F. A. M., Tripoli Shrine A.A.O.N.M.S., and the Winnebagoland Shrine Club. He was a WWII Navy veteran and a former member of Elks Lodge 292; Oshkosh Y.M.C.A. where he enjoyed swimming. He was an avid golfer and former member of the Oshkosh Country Club. One of his proudest moments was the hole-in-one on #14 and the eagle on # 15 at O.C.C.
Gil's greatest joy was his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; children, Susan (John) Hazelberg, Michael Witzke, Charles (Mary) Witzke all of Oshkosh; step daughters, Melody (David) Stauffer of West Chester, PA, Carrie Hughes of Oshkosh; grandchildren, Asia (Andrew) Backus, Lexa (Jeff) Steers, Ethan and Brigham Kargus, Crystal, T J (Tammy) and Erica Eiler; great grandchildren Mia and Ellie Backaus and Liam Steers. Gil was also survived by two brothers, LeRoy (Kay) Witzke and Henry Witzke both of Oshkosh and one sister Audrey McBrair of Holiday, FL.
A memorial service for Gil will be on Sunday, July 18, 2010 at 3:00 PM at the Konrad-Behlman Funeral Home (Westside). Family and friends may visit at the funeral home on Sunday from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. Inurnment will be in Lake View Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established to the Evergreen Benevolent Fund.
Gil's family wishes to thank Heartland Hospice, the V.N.A. and Evergreen Retirement Community for all the compassionate care given to him over the last several years.
