Alfred F. Zur Horst

Alfred Friedrich zur Horst, age 93, of Oshkosh, entered the Kingdom of Heaven on Thursday, June 2, 2022 surrounded by family. Alfred was born on August 7, 1928 in Struckhauser Moor, Germany to Hinrich and Johanne zur Horst. In his early 30’s, he traveled across the ocean to make a home in the United States. On April 14, 1962, Alfred and Margard were joined in marriage at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Oshkosh and the two celebrated over 50 years of wonderful marriage together. 

He worked at Leach Company for 34 years, and owned Al’s Stump Removal. He  ran his business well into his 90’s and his work ethic was beyond compare.Alfred served as a charter member of Big Brothers, receiving many awards for his service over the years.  He was a member of the St. Elizabeth Voice Club. As a faithful servant of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, he belonged to Koninia, ushered and served on the church council.

He also enjoyed bowling, dancing, and listening to polka music on Saturday mornings. Alfred and Margard loved wintering in Florida, making Daytona Beach their second home for over 30 years.

Alfred is survived by his daughters; Sonja (Robert) Quant and Heidi (Robert) Witt; grandchildren, Kristi (Nicholas) Levy, Michael (Marika) Quant, Ryan (Cassi) Witt, and Michelle Witt; great-grandchildren, Sydney and Jaylen Levy, Alyvia and Alaska Witt, and Sophie and Mia Quant; sisters-in-law, Gerda zur Horst and Beverly Habermehl, and many beloved nieces and a nephew.

In addition to his parents, and wife, Margard, he was preceded in death by his brother, Heinrich zur Horst, and brother-in-law, Heinz Habermehl.

A funeral service for Alfred will be held at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 1860 Wisconsin St. on Thursday, June 9, 2022 at 4:00 PM. Visitation will be held at the church from 2:00 PM until the time of the service. Private interment will take place at Lake View Memorial Park.A memorial will be established for Our Savior’s Lutheran Church.
