Anne M. Hintz

October 5, 1938 — May 15, 2024

Anne Mercedes (Keating) Hintz passed away peacefully on May 15, 2024.  Anne was born on October 5, 1938 in Yonkers, NY to Thomas and Anna Keating. She was the only girl in a good Irish family with five brothers. Anne loved school and was an enthusiastic lifelong learner.  She graduated as a French major from the College of Mount Saint Vincent in the Bronx and received a prestigious award from the New York area Alliance Francais to study in Paris, and later a Fulbright award for a year of study at the Universite’ de Poitiers, France.  Anne was then admitted to the French program at Yale University, where she studied before taking a break to teach French at Connecticut College for two years before returning to Yale.  In 1964, she met fellow graduate student Stephen Hintz. They were engaged in two months and married in 1966.  Anne received her Ph.D. in Romance Languages from Yale.  They both taught at the University of Missouri-Saint Louis before coming to Oshkosh, WI in 1972 where Anne spent most of her professional career teaching at UW Oshkosh and the UW Fox Valley.

Anne’s life in Oshkosh took on many dimensions.  She and Steve had two boys, Daniel and Gordon, and she took an active part in their school lives as a Cub Scout Den Mother and Soccer Mom.  She was active in the Oshkosh Symphony League and Fox Valley Alliance Francais.  Anne also believed in good government and began her political involvement by serving as State Senator Gary Goyke’s District Secretary.  With the City of Oshkosh, she served as a member of the Board of Zoning Appeals. Anne was twice the president of the Oshkosh League of Women Voters as well as the president of the University Faculty Dames.  Anne was a voracious reader and one of her favorite activities was her book group that met every month for over forty years.  She and Steve especially loved opera and travel. She made it to 49 of 50 states and five continents, and visited Italy 13 times.

Anne is survived by her husband Stephen, sons Daniel and Gordon (Elizabeth), grandchildren William, Beatrix, and Gethin, and brothers Bill and Ed, as well as several nieces and a nephew. She was preceded in death by her parents Thomas and Anna, and brothers Tom, Richard, and Robert. The family would like to thank the Aurora Hospital and Hospice staff for their care. A visitation will be held on May 24, 2024 at Konrad-Behlman Funeral Home, 100 Lake Pointe Drive, Oshkosh. WI  54904 from 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm.
