Burton Simeon Menzel

Burton S. Menzel, age 89, of Oshkosh was born to Eternal Life on March 1, 2006 at Aurora Medical Center. Burton was born in Oshkosh on Feb. 8, 1917 a son of F.S. and Ida (Nolte) Menzel. He was the great-grandson of John G. Gunz, one of the pioneer settlers of Oshkosh. Burton attended Jefferson School, Oshkosh High School, the Oshkosh Business College and the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater. He came home to Oshkosh in 1939 to help with the family hardware business after his father took ill. He served his country during World War II, as an officer in the US Army. During a five day military leave, he returned to Oshkosh to marry his sweetheart Hildegarde Hoyer on Feb. 4, 1943. He then left to serve his country in the European Theater and returned two years later. After the war, Burton returned to the family business (Menzel Hardware Co.) which he and his brother Godfrey managed. In 1958, the brothers sold the business and in 1960 Burton began a career with the Winnebago Mental Health Institute. He retired in 1979 as their Business Manager. Burton was a long time member of Grace Lutheran Church and actively supported both the church and school. Survivors include his four children, Thomas Hoyer Menzel of Sacramento, CA, Patricia Ann (Joseph)Werrell of Hubert, NC, Mark Burton (Mary) Menzel of Hartland, WI and Paul Theodore (Denise) Menzel of Des Moines, IA; eleven grandchildren, Shelly Menzel, Lisa Naumann, Christine Hilts, Anne Kennedy, Michael Werrell, Michael, Matthew and Marcus Menzel, Daniel, Rachel and Sarah Menzel; five great grandchildren, Matthew and Daniel Hilts, Ethan and Grace Kennedy and Jacob Oscar Naumann. Burton and Hildegarde were married for 49 years when she preceded him in death on November 30, 1992. Also preceding him in death were his brother, Godfrey and sisters, Dorothy Olson and Mildred Galow.Burt will be remembered by his children as a kind, loving man who instilled in them integrity and Christian values. He enjoyed spending time with his family, gardening and Packers/Badgers football.His funeral service will be held at Grace Ev. Lutheran Church (913 Nebraska St.) on Monday March 6, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Gregg Schoeneck officiating. Family and friends may call at the church from 10:00 a.m. to the service time. Interment will be at Lake View Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorials in Burtons name be given to Grace Lutheran School, 913 Nebraska St., Oshkosh, WI 54901.The family would like to thank the extraordinary staff at Gabriels Villa for their marvelous care. They would also like to thank Dr. Subramani, Dr. William Weber and the wonderful nurses and staff at Aurora Medical Center.
