A mighty tree has fallen. A man secure in his place, Daniel Roman Tuchscherer died at the age of 93 on December 23, 2014, at Evergreen Community, surrounded by his children and his grandchildren. By the time a man is 93, hes had many phases in his life. The grace Dan displayed at the end of his life was a natural extension of the kindness he showed throughout it. He loved his family and reveled in their love for him. He had friends of all ages and styles. He was a man to whom truly no one was a stranger, a man who only needed a handshake to seal a deal. And he loved directing! He could move mountains with a raised eyebrow or pointed finger. And oh, that candor! He and his wife of 67 years, Mary Ann, had 11 children together. He is preceded in death by his wife Mary Ann, his son Dan Jr., and an infant son, Timmy. There are still many of us left: Pat (Susan Marth), Marsha (Dan Jr.s wife), Jane (David Cody), Sue (Steve Sielemann), Jim, Bill (Devron), John (Becky), Tom (Michele), Ann (Don Allen), and Dave (Minimay), fourteen grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.Dan flew P-47s and P-51s in combat in World War II. He loved planes, even prior to meeting Amelia Earhart as a youngster, until the day he died. He loved to share his fascination of aviation with others and many people would learn to love flying as a result of spending time with him.Dan was a builder of houses. He frequently had projects going and was always adding on a new room. And adding a new friendship. He loved hunting and fishing, and shared that enthusiasm with many. He outfitted his children with skating rinks, baseballs and gloves, archery equipment, stilts, skates, bikes, hunting and fishing gear. He lived a very full outdoor life. He loved reading. Wherever he lived there were books and magazines within easy reach. He wrote many letters to family to be sure they were kept abreast of the details of his and each others daily lives. There was always room for one more at his table and in his home. He had a wonderful sense of humor. Mostly, he loved his wife Mary Ann. They were a fine team. The Memorial Service will be on Monday, December 29, 2014 at St. Raphaels Church, 830 South Westhaven at 11am. Visiting with friends and family is from 10-11 am. An inurnment will take place at Calvary Cemetery at a later date.In lieu of flowers, please send donations to your favorite charity.Heartfelt gratitude to the Mercy Hospital staff who provided kind care, and to Hospice, who helped us to be present for Dads last hours. Deep thanks to the caregivers at Evergreen Community, who are feeling the loss of Dan. They cared for him daily to support him in living a life that was enjoyable for him to the end. They also supported the family so that we could appreciate the last precious time together. Dans life was enriched by his many friends there.
