David J. Scofield, 61 of Oshkosh, died Friday May 14, 2010 at his home following a three-year battle with leukemia. He was born in Oshkosh on June 25, 1948 son of James G. and Grace G. Mingus Scofield. David proudly and honorably served his country in the U.S. Army during the Viet Nam conflict, being severely wounded in the process. He was a lifetime member of the Viet Nam Veterans of America Chapter 437; a member of Disabled American Veterans Post 17; an avid member of both Whitetails Unlimited and the Otter Street Fishing Club. He is survived by his life partner, Patty Bonneau of Oshkosh; son Justin (Christina) Scofield of Monona, WI; daughter, Claudine Bonneau of Oshkosh; brothers, James (Karen) Scofield of Oshkosh, Thomas (Julie) Scofield of Oshkosh, Robert (Joanne) Mingus of Taylor, WI; sisters, Cynthia (Dan) Schmidt of Pine River, WI, and Barbara Sales of Oshkosh; step-brothers, Ken (Mary) Sperling of Oshkosh and Ron (Carol) Sperling of Bonita Springs, FL; step-father, Fred Sperling of Oshkosh; his precious granddaughter, Lilianna Scofield of Monona, WI; and numerous nieces and nephews. His parents and a brother, Robert "Tootie" Scofield, preceded him in death. Those who knew him will remember him as a loving partner, father, and friend with a zest for life matched by few. He wanted the best for all those around him. In life he was the first to offer his help and the last to ask for it. David had an overwhelming passion for everything he did. As an avid hunter, fisherman, and traveler, he always enjoyed time spent in the company of good friends and family. He also had a great fondness for his many adventures to Canada and Jamaica. He touched the lives of so many along the way on his journey in life and brought so much joy to all those he knew. He taught all of us what was truly important in life. We will honor and cherish his memory always and feel blessed to have known him. He is very loved and will be dearly missed. In compliance with David's wishes he will be cremated and a private memorial service will be held at a later date. Anyone caring to do so may give memorial contributions to the Oshkosh Area Humane Society; Fields of Honor Military Veterans Museum; or to Affinity Hospice in David's honor. David's family wishes to express the most heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Karen Gremminger and the staff at the Michael D. Wachtel Cancer Center, and to Affinity Hospice for the care and concern given David.
