David M. Gallup, age 76 of Oshkosh, passed away on Wednesday, December 5, 2018 at St. Elizabeth Hospital of Appleton. He was born on July 8, 1942 in La Crosse. Growing up, David formed a special bond with his late grandmother Judith Lind who helped raise him while his father was in the military. He graduated from Logan High School in La Crosse, and at the ripe age of 17 years old, joined the United States Navy. As a Sonarman, he assisted with underwater surveillance and helped with navigation and search and rescue operations. During his service, David took part in the Cuban Missile Crisis, also known as the October Crisis of 1962.
David married his late wife, Maureen Bor in 1964 in New York and their marriage was blessed with two daughters. David recently joked with his girls that after his and Maureen’s introduction to each other on a blind date, Maureen made him work tirelessly for her hand in marriage.
After his time in the Navy, David worked for the New York transit subway system. Later in his life he worked as an environmental safety manager at Oshkosh Corporation where he would retire after many dedicated years with the company.
After retirement, David traveled to the Galapagos Islands, Cozumel, Mazatlan, Key Largo, Key West, and Lake Michigan to scuba dive. He also went deep sea fishing on several of his expeditions.
David will be deeply missed by his daughters, Ingrid (Ed) Lemke and Susan Gallup; grandson, David Lemke; brothers, Kenneth (Wanda), George and Arnold; sisters, Kathy (Ray) Hays, Donna (late husband, Marvin) Dinger and Patricia (late husband, Ben) Scott; step-mother, Doris; brother-in-law, Jim (Jean) Bor; and good friends, Joe Roehrick, Mary Wrage, Paula (Clayton) Biewer, and Heather Bloom of the West Michigan Dive Club.
