Donald E. Schroeder Sr., 91, of Oshkosh, died on Tuesday, November 3, 2009 at Mercy Medical Center. Donald was born in Ripon, WI on May 13, 1918 the son of Edward and Pauline Schimmel Schroeder. He graduated from Ripon High School where his love of music began. He was a member of the high school band.In October 1940 he left from Oshkosh, a member of the 127th Infantry Band, 32nd Red Arrow Division. He served overseas in Australia and New Guinea, being discharged on July 27, 1945.On June 8, 1945, while being stationed at Camp Lee, Virginia he married Delores Hafemann of Oshkosh, WI. They celebrated 64 years of marriage in June 2009.For 44 years he worked as accountant, secretary and treasurer of the Gibson Co. located in Oshkosh, Fond du Lac. Neenah-Menasha, and Appleton. After closing the business he worked part time for Flanegan Rentals and Zion Lutheran Church. He was always one to keep busy.For approximately 50 years he was a member of St John's Ev. Lutheran Church (the only church on Main St). He was a long time member of the finance committee and an usher. He also served as treasurer of the church for 8 years.Don was a devoted family man, a loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle, and friend. He will be sadly missed by all of us.He leaves behind his wife, son, Richard L. (Karin), and their sons, Thomas and Michael of Menomonee Falls, WI. Also grandson, David of Columbia, SC, Bradley and granddaughter, Leah of Cookville, TN, daughters-in-law, Brenda Schroeder and Laurie Murdock both of Cooksville, TN. Also two nieces and two nephews and their families.He was preceded in death by his son, Donald E. Schroeder JR. and a daughter Susan Kay Schroeder, his parents, brother Arnold and sister, Laura Clausen.We wish to thank Don's doctors, Dr. Karin Gremminger and Dr. Tom Klinkhamer from Fox Valley Hematology and Oncology and all the staff and Dr Matt Kraemer for all their care and support. Also Affinity and their staff of nurses for the love and care they gave Don.A funeral service will be on Saturday, November 7, 2009 at 11:00 AM at the St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church (808 N. Main St.) with the Rev. Ted Johanson officiating. Family and friends may visit at the church on Saturday from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. A memorial has been established.
