Donald Emil Kieckhafer

August 16, 1925 — August 17, 2015

Donald E. Kieckhafer, age 90, passed away on Monday, August 17, 2015 at Eden Meadows Green House. He was born in Oshkosh on August 16, 1925 to Emil and Bertha (Karutz) Kieckhafer, who preceded him in death.Don enlisted in the United States Navy in 1943 where he spent nearly three proud years aboard the U.S.S. Gunason (DE795) for the duration of WWII. He left the service in 1946. Don married Dolores Stutz in 1949 before being called back to service in 1950 to serve in the Korean War. When he returned from service in 1952, Don and Dolores settled in Oshkosh in their home that Don built, raising their three children there.Don was the head custodian at Oshkosh West High School, retiring in September 1987 after 32 years of service. He was a lifetime member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ where he was also active in the Men's Club. He was also a proud member of the Destroyer Escort Sailors Association (DESA). Don enjoyed playing golf, gardening, and yard work. He was a talented painter and handyman of all sorts. Don and Dolores loved to dance and were members of the Top Hat Dance Club and the American Legion Dance Club. After Don retired, he and Dolores enjoyed traveling the country with friends and spending winter months in Florida. They also looked forward to the annual Navy Ship Reunions and spending time with their children and grandchildren at their homes.In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his loving wife, Dolores; his sister, Irma Kieckhafer; brothers, Carl, Robert (Dorothy), and Walter Kieckhafer; as well as his son-in-law, John PolzinDon is survived by his three children, Gail Polzin, Deerfield, WI; Jeffery (Laurie) Kieckhafer, Oshkosh; Donna (Randy) Feldman, Minnetonka, MN; his brother, Harry (Priscilla) Kieckhafer, Oshkosh; five grandchildren, Matthew (Rachel) Polzin, Deerfield, WI; Kristen (Scott) Witkowski, Deerfield, WI; Ashley (fianc Elliot Nitzkowski) Feldman, St. Paul , MN; Benjamin (Jessica) Feldman, Wayzata, MN; and Kali Kieckhafer, Oshkosh; four great -grandchildren, Aubrey and Eli Witzkowski, Deerfield, WI; Hayden and Lance Polzin, Deerfield, WI. Don is also survived by many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.Services for Don will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 22, 2015 at St. Paul's United Church of Christ (1250 Leonard Point, Oshkosh 54904); Rev. Daniel Schultz will be officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Friday, August 21, 2015 at Konrad-Behlman Funeral Home- Westside (100 Lake Pointe Drive, Oshkosh, WI 54904) and again on Saturday at St. Paul's U.C.C. from 10:00 am until the time of service. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery.In lieu of flowers a memorial is being established.The family would like to express their sincere thanks to the staff at Gabriel's Villa, Eden Meadows Rehab and Eden Meadows Green House for their loving care and friendship during Don's stays.
