Donald W. Sphatt, 79 of Oshkosh, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Thursday August 23, 2007 after a five-year battle with cancer. He was born on September 27, 1927 in Oshkosh, the son of Charles and Mabel (Reinke) Sphatt. On November 17, 1951, he married Beverly Leinweber. Don was a graduate of Oshkosh High School. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II.In the 1950s Donald owned a service station, Dons City Service. He then was employed as a mechanic for 30 years for the City of Oshkosh Street Department. He was a member of the First English Lutheran Church.He is survived by his wife, Beverly Sphatt, one son, Dennis (Pat) Sphatt, one daughter, Peggy (Steve) Ruedinger, one sister, Joyce Kempf, and three special grandchildren, Katie, Kevin, and Kyle Ruedinger. He is also survived by many cousins, nieces, and nephews. In addition, he is survived by his adopted black lab, Jasmine. Don was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Steve, and his brothers, Herbert and Richard Sphatt.Donald enjoyed gardening, watching sporting events of all types, feeding his birds, and was our Mr. Fix-it. He was a mechanic for all of his family and friends his entire life, repairing everything with nothing but his hands and a few tools.His funeral service will be held on Saturday August 25, 2007 at Noon at the First English Lutheran Church with the Revs. Martin Ruge and Timothy Greenwald officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until the time of the service at Noon in the church. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the First English Organ Fund.Special thanks to Doctors Joel Lundberg and Michael Jones of the Fond du Lac Regional Clinic. Also a thank you to the Agnesian Hospice caregivers, especially Donna, whos caring and fun personality he truly enjoyed. We would also like to thank Pastor Martin Ruge for his home visits.Dad and Grandpa, through the years you were always there for us and proud of us. You taught us much. We watched your steps grow wearier each day, yet you were strong to the end. So now the end is here, youve lived a life that was full. You loved, you laughed, and you cried. We know you did it your way. Your mansion awaits, where youll never grow old. So journey home on angels wings, to your Father. Jesus left to prepare a place for you to live eternally. Peace be with you, until we meet again.
