Donovan Herman Weitz passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family on March 17, 2025, at the age of 81. He was born in Oshkosh, Wisconsin to Herman and Lois (née Washburn) Weitz on January 14, 1944, or as he would always say, “the first, the fourteenth of forty-four.”
On February 17, 1962, Donovan married the love of his life, Lee, and together they shared 60 wonderful years. They were blessed with two daughters, Julie and Amy, who filled their lives with joy and pride.
A skilled stonemason and proud member of the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craft Workers, Donovan enjoyed a long and fulfilling career helping build some of the community’s most historic structures. Known for his craftsmanship, Donovan was a man of many talents who could fix almost anything you put in front of him. He especially enjoyed rebuilding old cars and restoring tractors. He was a lifelong sportsman, looking for every opportunity he could to get out hunting or fishing with family, and could almost always be found with some sort of sweet treat in his hand.
As a loyal husband, supportive father, loving grandpa, and trusted great-grandpa, Donovan’s devotion to his family was unwavering. He especially enjoyed watching his great-grandchildren grow, always making them feel seen and loved. Whether listening to their stories and laughs at family cookouts, playing “student” in their make-believe classrooms, or teaching them how to fix something — he was always there for those he loved.
Donovan was Lutheran by faith and maintained a close relationship with the Lord. When his time came, the Lord embraced him with open arms, welcoming him with peace and love as he was reunited with those who had gone before him, especially his beloved wife, Lee.
He is survived by his children Julie Nikolaus (Scott Engel) and Amy Volkman (Gary); grandchildren Kiel Nikolaus (Linda), Tara Elmer (Andy), and Trista (Codey) Graham; great-grandchildren Lucy, Charley & Grace Nikolaus, Bentley DuFresne and Ellie Graham, and Owen and Ruby Elmer.
A private service will be held for the family to honor Donovan and celebrate the lasting legacy he leaves behind.
Our family would like to express gratitude for the unconditional love we’ve received from friends near and far. We’d also like to share a special appreciation to Pastor John Dorn of Living Water Lutheran Church.
