Dorothy Charlotte Harold McNeil died peacefully on Tuesday, September 9, 2008. She was in the care of her loving family and the faithful staff of Gabriels Villa, in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Dorothy was born in Baldwin, New York on July 20, 1911. She was the oldest of three children born to Charles William Harold and Helen Josephine Partington Harold. She and Alexander Lee McNeil of Ellenville, New York, were married on November 23, 1961 at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Far Rockaway, New York. They lived and worked in New York until 1968, when they retired to Pompano Beach, FL. Alex died there in 1982. Dorothy lived on in Florida until 1998, when she moved to Oshkosh to be near her family. Mrs. McNeil was educated in New York State. She graduated from St. Francis de Sales Elementary School in 1925, from Bishop McDonald High School in 1929, and from St. Joseph College for Women in 1933. While still in elementary school, Dorothy and her sister Virginia played organ and violin, respectively, for Masses and services at St. Rose of Lima Church in Rockaway Beach, New York. For many years, Dorothy was director of music and organist at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church in Far Rockaway, New York. She taught music and history at St. Brendans High School in Brooklyn, New York for thirty years. She was also an organist for St. Gabriels Church in Pompano Beach, Florida, and held that position until she was into her eighties. A member of St. Johns Church, and then St. Jude the Apostle, she was grateful for the volunteers who brought her Holy Communion at Gabriels Villa each week. Dorothy kept in touch with family and friends from as far away as California and Rhode Island, enjoying talking by phone daily. She also spent her last years praying for everyone she knew. Dorothy was predeceased by her husband Alex, by her sisters Virginia Kuhn and Helen Mulkeen, her brothers-in-law Harry Kuhn and William E. Mulkeen, and by her nephew William C. Mulkeen. She is survived by seven nieces and three nephews. They are: Bernard Finnerty and Eileen Finnerty of Patchogue, N. Y.; Mary Noel (William) Page of McLean, Virginia; Helen Mulkeen of Washington, DC; Harry Kuhn (Dominique) of South Plainfield, N. J.; Anne (David) Romond of Oshkosh, WI; Patricia (John) Droney of West Hartford, CT; Virginia Macpherson of Fairfax, VA; Charles (Joan) Mulkeen of Glen Rock, NJ; and Susan (Richard) Tiffin of Glen Allen, VA. Dorothy also was especially proud of her grand and great-grand nieces and nephews. A Memorial Mass is planned for Friday, October 3, 2008. Father Tom Reynebeau of St. Jude Parish will officiate at the St. Jude Parish (Sacred Heart Church) 519 Knapp Street, Oshkosh, WI at 10 AM. Inurnment will be in Mount Saint Benedict Cemetery in Bloomfield, Connecticut. Donations to memorialize Dorothy may be made to St. Jude Parish (Sacred Heart Church), 519 Knapp Street, Oshkosh WI 54902, and to the Bethel Foundation, 225 N Eagle Street, Oshkosh, WI 54902. Rest in peace, Aunt Dot, with Alex and with all of your family and friends. May you enjoy cups of hot coffee forever.
