Oshkosh

Doyle Rai Hudson passed away peacefully at Sharehaven at Evergreen in Oshkosh, WI on August 1, 2024. Doyle was born on April 19, 1942, in Ellsworth, WI, the son of Warner and Marjorie (Whipple) Hudson.

Doyle earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics and physics from UW-River Falls in 1964. After graduation, he became a teacher in the Oshkosh Area School District where he taught mathematics at Oshkosh High School and Oshkosh North High School. While teaching at Oshkosh High School, he met the love of his life, Joan Schatzka who taught business education. They were married on August 6, 1966, and had two children Jeffrey and Julie.

During the summers of 1967-1969, Doyle attended the University of Oregon and received a master’s degree in mathematics. While teaching, Doyle was very active in the Oshkosh Education Association serving as chairman of the negotiations committee, president of the Association, chairman of the Teacher Defense committee, and representative to the UniServ Council. He was a lifetime member of the Wisconsin and National Education Associations.

Doyle was a member of First United Methodist Church in Oshkosh since 1966. He was very active on several committees and enjoyed making crafts with Joan for the church bazaar.

Doyle and Joan enjoyed traveling, especially after they retired from teaching in 1997. They visited all 50 U.S. states, most of Canada and Europe, and many other countries throughout the world. Yet some of their most memorable trips were with their children and grandchildren to Florida and lake homes around Wisconsin.

In retirement, Doyle also enjoyed the camaraderie of friends during breakfast outings, bowling league, playing cards, and especially while golfing. In 2019 Doyle and Joan moved to Evergreen Retirement Community where they enjoyed many friendships and activities.

Doyle is survived by his son, Jeff (Char) Hudson of Oshkosh; daughter, Julie (Jason) Voelker of Neenah; grandchildren, John and Sarah Hudson and Wyatt and Margo Voelker; brother, Rollin Hudson of Texas; sister-in-law, Jackie Hudson of Missouri, and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Joan Hudson; parents, Warner and Marjorie Hudson; brother, Larry Hudson; granddaughter Anna Charlotte Voelker; brother & sister-in-law DaWayne and Doris Schatzka.
