Elmer Levine, 86, of Oshkosh, died at Evergreen RetirementCommunity on Sunday, November 5, 2006. Elmer was born on January 3, 1920 in Negaunee, MI to Henry and Leah Loewenstein Levine. He grew up in Chicago and then settled in Oshkosh in 1954 where he met Carole Phillip and they were married on May 11, 1957.Survivors include his wife, Carole; sons, Philip (Lisa), David (Jolene), Richard, and Kenneth (Ann); and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, James; two brothers, Louis and Sam; and one sister, Dorothy Serota.Elmer was a corporate officer of the Badger Lumber and Manufacturing Co. and its parent company, the Dearborn Co. Badger Lumber closed its doors in 1982 and after a year of retirement, he took a job with Winnebago County as a Benefit Specialist, working with people sixty years of age and older. Elmer served in the Army during World War II and was a member of American Legion Cook Fuller Post #70. He had been a member of the American Legion since 1945.Elmer lived a life of involvement. He was a past president of the PTA at Jacob Shapiro School and of the Booster Club at Oshkosh West High School and had been a coach for the Cub Scouts baseball when his children were young. He was also a past president of Norman Cabot Lodge, BNai BRith and co-chairman of the Brother Hood Week, (Brother Hood of Christians and Jews). He served for 32 years as secretary of the Oshkosh Jewish Welfare Fund and for three years on the Salvation Army Board. Elmer was active at the Oshkosh Senior Center; serving on the Executive Board, Publicity Committee, Board of Friendship, he served for 18 years and as chairman for two years of the Senior Olympic Committee.Friends and family are invited to a lunch at the Senior Center Annex from 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM Saturday, November 11, 2006. At Elmers request there will be no viewing or memorial service, he will be cremated and inurned near his son, James.The Levine family would like to thank Dr. Thompson, Dr. Al-Nouri, Dr. Zornosa, Dr. Horan and Evergreen Retirement Community for the wonderful care Elmer received. They would also like to thank the staff at the Dialysis Center at Mercy Medical Center.In lieu of flowers a donation to the charity of your choice will be appreciated.
