Elsie Bernardine Schmid found peace and rest in her Saviors arms on Christmas Day, December 25, 2005 at Bethel Home where she resided for the past two years. Elsie was born to the late William and Anna Boyd Metzler on March 27, 1916, in Warren, MN. Elsie married Walter R Schmid, Sr. on June 16, 1936, in Hayward WI where they farmed until 1939 when they moved to Kewaskum. In 1945, they moved to the Town of Black Wolf in Winnebago Co where they continued farming and lived for almost 55 years. With the onset of Alzheimers, Elsie had Home Care along with stays at the Christian Community Home, Centennial Inn, and Bethel Home. Elsie taught 1 year of school before her marriage. She started working in 1949 at Infant Socks in Fond du Lac, Waite Carpet in Oshkosh and retired from Neubergers (King Industries) in 1981. Elsie served on the school board for the former Howlett School for 15 years and was instrumental in building a new two room school building replacing a one-room building that was overcrowded. She also was a 4-H leader 5 years for the Howlett Hustlers 4-H Club. Elsie loved to travel with her husband, toured 49 states and went on several cruises and bus trips. They also traveled to Europe in 1990. Elsie took pictures and made meticulous scrapbooks, sewed clothes and quilts, and crocheted many Afghans. She loved to give others a helping hand. Elsie was a member of Bethany United Church of Christ, Oshkosh, where she served on the Executive Council and Board of Worship Chairman for 12 years. Elsie Schmid was preceded in death by her parents, and her sister and brother-in-law, Lucetta and Fred Menger. and grandson-in-law, David Bibbs. She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Walter, at Bethel Home; four children, and fourteen grandchildren: daughter, Arloene Arl (Ralph) Brooks, Weyauwega; grandchildren, Randy (Vicky) Paulson, Oshkosh, Kenn (Sue) Paulson, Appleton, Scott (Donna) Paulson, Winston GA, Cindy Paulson (fianc Butch Rabetski), Neenah, Todd (Gina) Paulson, Neenah, son, Walter, Jr. (friend, Sheryl Fredin), Oshkosh; grandchildren, Michelle Schmid (friend Mark Schultz), Van Dyne, Mary (Tony) Voulgaris, Van Dyne, Stefanija (Dustin) Hinds, Van Dyne, Christopher Schmid (fianc-Lisa Torn) Oshkosh; daughter, Margery (Clarence) Werner, Van Dyne; grandchildren, David (Brenda) Werner, Oshkosh, Cathy (Mike) Pamperin, Hartford; and daughter, Janice (LeRoy) Heller, Oshkosh; grandchildren, SMSgt Amy Patterson-Bibbs, U. S. Air Force, Moore OK, Daniel (Joan) Heller, Appleton and SSgt Aaron Heller, U. S. Army Reserves (fiance, Stephanie Placko), Ft. Benning, Georgia. She is further survived by twenty-three great-grandchildren: Sarah and Jennifer Paulson, Oshkosh, Emily Paulson, Appleton, Breanna and Jordan Paulson, Oshkosh, Elizabeth Gassner, Neenah, Rachel and Taylor Paulson, Winston, Georgia, Kaise and McKenna Paulson, Neenah, Alexandra, Demetri and Michael Voulgaris, Van Dyne, Natasha Moxon, Neenah, Brittany Werner, Oshkosh, Eric, Scott and Holly Pamperin, Hartford, Jonathon, Michael, and Erika Patterson, Moore, OK; Benjamin and Katherine Heller, Appleton. She is further survived by five nieces, one nephew and cousins. Funeral service for Elsie will be Saturday, December 31, 2005 at 11:00 AM at Bethany United Church of Christ (145 W. 24th) with Rev. Kevin Mundell officiating. Family and friends may call on Friday, December 30, 2005 from 4:00 – 7:00 PM at Konrad-Behlman Funeral Home- Westside and also on Saturday at church from 10:00 AM until time of service. Entombment will be Monday, January 2, 2006 at 11:00 AM at Lake View Memorial Park. Memorials will be given to Bethany United Church of Christ-Missions and the Salvation Army. The family thanks the staff on 2 East at Bethel Home for their excellent care and concern while taking care of Elsie.
