Etta Jean Safford

Etta Jean Safford (Hannemann) passed away peacefully on June 4, 2015 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin at the age of 95. Jean is survived by her son, Rick Safford (Kathryn), grandchildren Geoffrey and Gina of Healdsburg, CA; as well as many nieces and nephews. Jean was preceded in death by her husband Richard and eleven brothers and sisters, Marvin (Merle), Lyle (Dianna), Kenneth (Louise), Leonard (Margaret), Milton Hannemann , Neoma (Frederick) Miller, Nelda (Paul) Kasuboski, Winzetta (Earl) Eulrich, Merle (Arthur) Hillman, Wilma (Hartwell) Weidemann, and Thelma Hannemann.Jean, daughter of Paul and Emma (Dreger) Hannemann, was born on September 26, 1919, in Winneconne, Wisconsin. She graduated from Winneconne High School and attended the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh earning a degree in Elementary Education. Jean married Richard Safford on September 25, 1943 and moved to Oshkosh. Jean taught at a variety of elementary schools in the Oshkosh/Winneconne area over her career that spanned 37 years to include Ball Prairie, Pickett Memorial, Oakdale, Winneconne Elementary and Roosevelt Elementary in Oshkosh. Jean told stories of the early years of teaching in the country schools and arriving early each morning to light the coal stove to warm the classrooms prior the children starting their school day. Jean was a skilled and passionate teacher working primarily in the early elementary grades. She was known for her ability and commitment to instill a solid foundation in the basic skills for each student in her classroom. Jean and Dick enjoyed travel during their free time, and especially enjoyed travelling to drum and bugle corps competitions throughout the United States.All are welcome to attend the celebration of Jeans life scheduled for Friday, June 12 at Konrad-Behlman Funeral Home-Eastside, 402 Waugoo Ave in Oshkosh, with Rev. Ralph Hanusa officiating. Visitation starts at 10:00 a.m., funeral at 11:00 a.m., burial at Lake View Memorial Park and a reception to follow.
