Floyd “Speed” Wambold, age 96, passed away at Whispering Pines Nursing Home in Ripon, WI on the morning of Thursday, September 29, 2022. He was born at Mercy Hospital to the late John and Eva (Schick) Wambold on February 21, 1926, in Oshkosh, WI. After graduating from Oshkosh High School, Speed proudly joined the United States Navy, and served aboard the USS Chepachet between the years 1944 -1946. A highlight of his military duty was going ashore in Nagasaki a month after the second atomic bomb was dropped.
After being honorably discharged from the Navy, Speed married Barbara Jean Adams on April 3, 1948, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Oshkosh. He worked for many years as a buyer for Rockwell International, retiring in 1981.
Speed’s first love was Barbara, but golf was a close second. One could always find him playing golf or watching golf. God would never let it rain when he was on the course. He won many amateur tournaments, gave lessons, and worked at Utica Golf Course after his retirement. Speed was also an avid bowler and a member of Oshkosh Elks club. Speed enjoyed watching any type of live sports, especially the Packers, Badgers, Bucks, and Brewers.
Speed is survived by his daughter, Linda (Bill) Smith, grandson, Brian as well as special nieces Patty (Diehl) Smits, Sue (Diehl) Meyers, Diane Diehl, Judie (Diehl) Smits along with many other nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Floyd was preceded in death by the love of his life, Barbara; brother, Robert Wambold; sister, Joanne Diehl; and brother-in-law, Richard “Dick” Adams
A service for Floyd “Speed” Wambold will be held at Lake View Memorial Park Chapel on Tuesday, October 4, 2022, at 11:30AM. Visitation will be held from 10:30AM until the time of service.
