Gertrude A. Rehwinkel of Oshkosh passed away at the age of 98 on March 21, 2013. Her final years were spent receiving exceptional care from the staff at Park View Health Center.Gert was born in Oshkosh on July 4, 1914, a daughter of Edwin C. and Linda Voigt Hoeft. Following graduation from Oshkosh High School in 1932, she was employed as a bookkeeper at Bell Machine Company, Newmans Department Store, Carl Ives Co., and Frank Leach Hardware.The focus of Gerts life was her family, her life-long friends, her church affiliations and, in her senior years, her quilting friendships. She was a faithful an active member of First English Lutheran Church throughout her life, participating in the Christian Fellowship Society, the Women of the Church, Lydia Circle, Charity Chapter of Bethel Home, and Bethel Auxiliary. She was a charter member of the Lakeside Quilters, a member of the Nine Patchers, and the Click Clackers quilting clubs. In her senior years she became an enthusiastic quilter making gorgeous quilts for her four granddaughters. With quilting, colors, patterns and design took her sewing interest in a new direction. The themes of joy for Gert were her accomplishments as a seamstress and her love of baking, canning and freezing for her family. The aromas that drifted from her kitchen windows were well known by her friends and neighbors with whom she shared her tasty treats. Her kitchen especially hummed at the holiday time with the making of countless varieties of cookies, caramels, divinity and the annual tradition of making popcorn balls. Survivors include her daughter, Karen Mantei of Littleton CO; her son, Bruce (Paula) Rehwinkel of Townsend MT; granddaughters Amy (Chris) Ingram, Tampa FL; Emily (Brad) Gillespie of Kalispell MT; Renee (David) Kayal of Washington DC; and Julia (Bruce) Roberts of the Republic of Trinidad. Also surviving are eight great grandchildren; cherished sister-in-law, Betty Hoeft; niece, Sue Tatum, Winter Springs FL, as well as additional nieces and a nephew.Gert was preceded in death by her parents; step-mother, Clara Remer Hoeft; husband, John H. Rehwinkel; brother, Gordon Hoeft; and son-in-law, Bill Mantei.A Memorial Service celebrating the life of Gert will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday May 18, 2013, at the Konrad-Behlman Funeral Home (Westside), 100 Lake Pointe Dr. with Rev. Martin Ruge of the First English Lutheran Church officiating. A luncheon and visitation will be held following the service at the funeral home.In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in Gerts memory at the Mercy Health Foundation for the Living Health Community at P O Box 3370 Oshkosh WI 54903-9908, or if you prefer, please donate to a charity of your choice or the Rehwinkel Family.Private interment will take place at Riverside Cemetery.
