Gertrude Schaap

Gertrude (Wynveen) Schaap, 95, of Oshkosh, died November 14, 2012 at Sterling House of Oshkosh. She was born in Cedar Grove, WI, the daughter of Garrett and Tena (DeRuyter) Wynveen. On August 7, 1940 she married Jay E. Schaap in Oostburg, WI. They were married 56 years when he preceded her in death May 5, 1996. Early in her life she began to be called Sis and was known by this name throughout her life as a resident of Cedar Grove, WI. Sis and Jay began married life in Milwaukee when Jay was an apprentice barber in 1940. After Jay served in the U.S. Navy in WW II, they settled in Cedar Grove, where they raised their family. Gertrude enjoyed working in various shoe factories and also the canning factory in Cedar Grove. One of her biggest joys was shopping and wearing hats to church, with everything to match. She also was an excellent seamstress, sewing mother and daughter dresses as her daughter was growing up. She had much pride in her Dutch heritage, and could be found dressed in her Dutch costume scrubbing the main street of Cedar Grove every summer during the Holland Festival. In 1984 Gertrude and Jay moved to Oshkosh and resided at Simeanna Apartments to live closer to their daughter and her family. She was a member of Plymouth Congregational Church and enjoyed the Ladies Sunday School Class. In 2005 she became a resident of Sterling House of Oshkosh, where she lived until her death. Everywhere Gertrude lived, she made friends and enjoyed helping others with housecleaning, sewing for them, or sending cards. She is survived by her daughter, Sarah (Gary) Troxell of Oshkosh, a son, John (Ann) Schaap, of Louisville, KY, four grandchildren, Brian (Jessica) Schaap and Barbara (Brian) Graham of Louisville, KY, Laura (Jesse) Laster of Nacogdoches, TX, and John Troxell of Oshkosh. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren, Matthew Laster of Nacogdoches, TX, Eli Schaap, Colin Graham and Ashley Graham all of Louisville, KY. She was preceded in death by one sister, Bertha Dees, and two brothers, Willis and Lloyd Wynveen. A memorial service will be held on Monday November 19, 2012 at 6:00 PM at Plymouth Congregational Church with Rev. Clarence Schultz officiating. Family and friends may call at the church on Monday from 4-6 PM. In lieu of flowers, a memorial to the Oshkosh Christian School or Plymouth Congregational Church has been established. The family would like to thank the entire staff of Sterling House of Oshkosh for their loving care of our mother, and also to the staff of Asera Care Hospice for their care during her last days before she crossed over the Jordan. There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God. Hebrews 4:9.
