Glen Edward Gutsmiedl, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 9, 2017 at Waterford Assisted Living. The son of Frank and Gertrude (Louisier) Gutsmiedl, he was born on January 27, 1935.
Glen served in the National Guard 127th Infantry 32nd Division from 1953-1956.
Glen married the love of his life, Marlyn Dettlaff, on February 11, 1956. They cherished 56 years of marriage before she passed away in 2012. Glen and Marlyn had four children. Linda (Ted) Huebbe, Dennis (Connie) Gutsmiedl, Gary (Janice) Gutsmiedl, and Mark (Daphne) Gutsmiedl. They were blessed with 12 grandkids. Joshua Frank, Adam Frank, Kyle (Lindsey) Gutsmiedl , Lucas Gutsmiedl, Melissa Gutsmiedl, Lisa (Jake) Frisch, Stacy (Ryan Owens) Gutsmiedl, Jenny (Mark Johnson) Gutsmiedl, Erich (Jeanna) Gutsmiedl, Angela (Adam) Klefstad, Candi (Willy) Magritz, Drake (Kelsy) Gutsmiedl.
Glen and Marlyn were further blessed with 13 great grandkids. Lauryn and Alex Frank, Mason and Allison Frank, Josie, Jake, and Cameron Frisch, Olivia Owens, Emma and Cooper Johnson, Kaden Magritz, Haelynn and Faith Gutsmiedl.
Glen’s sister Barbara Burgett preceded his passing in 2014. He is further survived by his brother-in-law Ken Burgett. Also grieving for his loss are Marlyn’s siblings: James, Donald, David, Jerry, Glen Dettlaff, Thomas, Lois Eaton, Judy Friar, Mary Jane (Midge) Bartels, Gloria Smith, and Kathy Kitzman. Glen also will be missed by his many nieces and nephews.
Glen worked at Alexian Brothers retirement home for Priests, Robbins Restaurant, and was retired from Rockwell International after 30+ years of service.
For Glen, his wife and family always came first. It gave him great joy to watch his own family grow as his children married and began their own families. He loved to fill his small cozy home with activities and sounds of grandkids and great grandkids playing and laughing. The more the merrier was rule at Mom and Dad’s.
Dad also loved to fish and hunt. He spent many hours teaching us to fish from shore at Menominee Park and later from his fishing boat. Many of his grandkids have precious memories of fishing with him as well.
Deer hunting was another love of Dad’s, one he shared with his three sons, grandsons and one granddaughter. They all were skilled at both bow and gun. Pheasant, duck, and goose hunting were included as well.
Dad had an artistic side not many people knew about. He could draw just about anything and sometimes painted still life pictures. He used this artistic side when he built his model railroad layouts often including mini replicas of his son’s hunting cabins with such minute detail in the scenery.
A memorial service will be held at Konrad-Behlman Funeral Homes-Westside, 100 Lake Pointe Dr., on Thursday, June 15, 2017 at 12:00PM with Dr. Ted Tromble officiating. Visitation will be held from 10:00AM until 12:00PM at the funeral home. Burial will be in Lake View Memorial Park.
Although he is at peace and finally dancing in Heaven with his beloved wife, Marlyn, he will be greatly missed but never forgotten.
