Gretchen A Flood

Gretchen A. Flood, 82, of Oshkosh died on October 20, 2014, at Waterford of Oshkosh Assisted Living. She was born in Racine, Wisconsin on February 14, 1932, a daughter of E. G. Jim and Eleanor (Fagan) von Germeten. On August 22, 1953, Gretchen married James Flood in Racine.Gretchen received her undergraduate degree from Milwaukee Downer College and Masters Degree from the University of Northern Colorado. She regarded raising her family of four children as her most important and favorite role. Gretchen held several professional positions in the Oshkosh community. In the early years of her employment, she taught art in the Oshkosh Public Schools, and served as color coordinator for an architectural firm. She also taught sewing to adults at the Oshkosh Vocational School. After earning her Masters Degree, she taught Early Childhood Education at Fox Valley Technical College for twenty-six years. She retired from that position in 1996.Gretchen had many interests. She collected antiques of all kinds. She learned to upholster furniture. She had an extensive collection of Shirley Temple dolls, and became proficient in doll repair. Prior to acting as general contractor with her husband for a new home, she traveled to Maine for a course in house building. She also enjoyed travel, particularly to learn about people and their cultures. She and her husband, Jim, visited more than sixty countries on five continents.In retirement, Gretchen and Jim continued to travel extensively in the United States and other countries. They especially enjoyed visiting with their four children and their families. Gretchen also maintained her life-long interest in people of all ages and backgrounds.Survivors include her husband, Jim, Oshkosh; three sons, Jim (Kim) Flood, Charlotte, North Carolina, Brian (Julie) Flood, Wilmette, Illinois, and Bill (Diane) Flood, Glen Ellyn, Illinois; one daughter, Colleen (Richard) Vosberg, Winfield, Illinois; grandchildren, Rachel, Jake, and Sarah Flood of Charlotte, North Carolina, Catherine Flood of Wilmette, Illinois, Hannah and Tracy Flood of Glen Ellyn, Illinois, and Mitchell Vosberg of Winfield, Illinois; and her brother, James (Joan) von Germeten of Phoenix, Arizona. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Susan Warner of Campbell, California.A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held in Most Blessed Sacrament Parish, St. Mary Catholic Church located at 605 Merritt Avenue in Oshkosh on Saturday, October 25 at 11:00 a.m., Father Jim Jugenheimer officiating. Family and friends may attend the visitation at St. Marys preceding the service between 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff members of Waterford of Oshkosh and Heartland Hospice Care for the exceptional kindness and care they offered to Gretchen.
