Hans Pops Werner, 90, of Oshkosh, passed away Sunday April 9, 2006 at the Mercy Medical Center in Oshkosh. He was born in Pleskov, Latvia on November 4, 1915, the son of John and Livia Gunheit Werner. Hans married Else Werner on February 26, 1940 in Kalisch, Poland. In his early years, Hans owned and operated a bakery in Germany where he was recognized for his pastries and cake decorating. Hans served in the German Army during World War II and was a prisoner of war for five years in North Africa. After the war, he was reunited with his family in Europe and eventually came to the United States on April 12, 1952, passing through Ellis Island. It was in 1957 when Hans and Else became proud citizens of the United States. Settling in Oshkosh, they ran a dairy farm south of town for the past fifty years. Hans enjoyed having grade school children from the Oshkosh area tour the farm each year. Hans was also very active in Soccer. In his early years he united with other immigrants and played together on the Oshkosh Soccer Club. In 2003, Hans was honored for his contributions to Soccer and was inducted into the Wisconsin Soccer Hall of Fame. He had belonged to the AMPI, and the Lutheran Bowling League. He had served as power of attorney and town constable in the Town of Black Wolf. His humor and quick wit will truly be missed.Hans is survived by his wife of sixty-six years, Else, two sons, Fred (Joanne) Werner, and Rick (Robin) Werner, both of Oshkosh, nine grandchildren, Douglas Werner, Daniel (Tiffany) Werner, Darren (Ali) Werner, Elizabeth (Steve) Snow, Katherine (Rob) Unger, Alexander Werner, Victoria (Jon) Paul, Patricia Werner, and Zachary Werner. Hans was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, John and Alfred Werner.His funeral services will be held on Wednesday April 12, 2006 at 7:00 PM at the Grace Ev. Lutheran Church, 913 Nebraska Avenue Oshkosh with the Rev. Daniel Krause officiating. Burial will be in Lake View Memorial Park. Family and friends may call at the church on Wednesday from 4:00 PM until the time of the services. Memorials may be given to the Grace Ev. Lutheran Church or the American Cancer Society.The family would like to extend our gratitude to the ICU nurses and physicians at Mercy Medical Center for their compassion during this past week.
