Harlan H. Quandt, age 82, of Oshkosh died on Saturday July 9, 2011 at Oakwood Manor with his family at his side. He was born in Woodland, WI on December 11, 1928, a son of the late Theodore and Alma Steinberg Quandt. Harlan married Lilly C. Baier on February 27, 1954 in Hartford, WI. She preceded him in death on January 30, 1979.Harlan graduated from Hartford High School in 1946, received his undergraduate and Masters degrees from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. At the University of Wisconsin, Harlan was a starting pitcher for the Badgers and played on the 1950 team that won the Big 10 Baseball Championship and finished fourth in the NCAA Baseball Tournament.In 1951, Harlan enlisted in the United States Army and served in Korea until 1953. He continued to serve in the U.S.Army Reserves until 1980 when he retired with the rank of Colonel. Harlan taught physical education at Oshkosh High School and at Oshkosh North High School from 1954 to 1987. He was the head Baseball coach at Oshkosh High School until 1972 and at Oshkosh North from 1972 to 1987. Harlan also served as Athletic Director of Oshkosh North High School from 1972 to 1978. His teams appeared at the WIAA State Baseball Tournaments seven times, winning the State Title in 1954 and 1956.Harlan was a founding member of the Snitz Club for Oshkosh Baseball; organized Babe Ruth Baseball in Oshkosh and organized Club 13 junior baseball clinics. He was instrumental in the designing and building of both the E.J. Schneider Baseball field and Peppler baseball fields. Harlan was inducted into the Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame (1979), the Oshkosh North Athletic Hall of Fame (1992), and the Oshkosh West Hall of Fame (2009).Harlan was a charter member of St. Andrews Lutheran Church, remaining a member for 50 years. During this time, he chaired the building committee that was responsible for the construction of the church and served as past president of the church council.Survivors include his five children, Kathryn (Peter) Drexler, Brownsville; Debra (Jeffrey) Martin, Stevens Point; Steven Harlan (Jill) Quandt, Oshkosh; David Harlan (Patricia) Quandt, Sherwood; Robert Harlan (Debbie) Quandt, Neenah; eight grandchildren, Kara (Benjamin) Martin Traster, Sara Drexler, Lynsey (Andrew) Konkol, Emily, Megan, Ethan, Haley, Jordan Quandt; and one great granddaughter, Lilly Konkol; and five siblings, Beatrice Quandt, Wauwatosa; Marvin (Gladys) Quandt, Woodland; Charles (Ellen) Quandt, Kokomo, IN; Marion (J.R.) Bloch, Portland, OR; Loris Mae (Tom) Gabel, Albuquerque, NM; He is also survived by his wife, Nancy King Quandt, Loveland, CO whom he married on October 7, 1980, and her children, David (Catherine) Loy, Minneapolis, MN; Michael (LuAnn) Loy, Brighton, MI; Wilbert (Mary) Hooten, Green Bay; her grandchildren, Janell, Abigail and Taylor Loy, Xavier, Ashley Hooten and two great grandchildren, Alexis and Mya Loy. Harlan was preceded in death by his parents, his late wife, Lilly C. Quandt and five siblings, Vernon, Mildred, Elvira, Theodore and Ronald Quandt.Funeral services will be held at St. Andrew Lutheran Church (1100 E. Murdock Ave.) on Wednesday July 13, 2011 at 9:30 AM with Rev. Karen Jewell officiating. Visitation will be at the Konrad-Behlman Funeral Home- Eastside (402 Waugoo Ave,) on Tuesday July 12, 2011 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM and at St. Andrews on Wednesday from 8:30 AM to the time of service. Interment will follow at Lake View Memorial Park with Military Honors. Memorials have been established for St. Andrews Lutheran Church, the Snitz Club for Oshkosh Baseball and the Brain Trauma Foundation.Following a traumatic head injury, Harlan spent over 20 years in the care of Oakwood Manor, where he became known as Coach. The staff at Oakwood Manor provided Harlan with unparalleled care and devotion, for which his family will be forever grateful.
