Harley Harold Rasmussen

April 16, 1926 — October 7, 2015

On Wednesday, October 7, 2015, Harley Harold Rasmussen passed away peacefully in his sleep after a long and frustrating battle with dementia and Parkinsons. He was born on April 16, 1926, in Oshkosh, son of the late Fred and Harriet (Lang) Rasmussen. Harley married Marion Manthei on November 12, 1949 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Oshkosh. Harley served as a Corporal in the U.S. Army at the end of WWII in the Philippines and Hawaii. He was an active member in the building of Our Saviors Church and parsonage when it initially moved to its Wisconsin Street location, plus he was active in their youth group. Harley retired in 1990 from Oshkosh Tire as a mechanic and general maintenance manager of the city school buses. He and his wife moved to Montello so they could be closer to their daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter. Harley was his son-in-laws right-hand man in multiple facets. If there was a project to be completed Harley was the correct man for the job! He thoroughly enjoyed helping out whenever he could, especially when it came to his granddaughter. Six years ago they moved back to Oshkosh so they could be closer to medical services. Harley was a very loving and caring man who gave his heart to all he met.Harley is survived by his wife, Marion, Oshkosh; daughter, Leslie (James) Schmidt, Montello; granddaughter, Kirsten (Steven) Larkin, Campbellsport; great grandson, Austin Larkin (the boy that would always bring a smile to his great grandpas face); a sister, Evelyn Lesch, Arizona; further survived by nieces, nephews, and many other family members. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Fred and Earl Rasmussen, and four sisters: Helen Rasmussen, Ruth Hitchcock, Elaine Conyers and Margaret Pedersen.Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 12, 2015, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, 1860 Wisconsin Street, Oshkosh, with Rev. Jan Veseth officiating. Entombment will follow at Lake View Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. Monday until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers a memorial is being established.Harleys family would like to express a special thank you to the nurses and staff of Bethel Homes-Serenity Garden Wing, and Affinity Hospice for their compassionate care of Harley during his last days.
