Henry H. Kimberly, Jr., died December 22 at his home. A lifetime resident of Oshkosh, Mr. Kimberly was born July 7, 1919, the son of the late Henry H. and Enid Morgan Kimberly. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia (nee White), whom he married on December 28, 1942, and his sisters Mary Kimberly Bullock (E.P.) of Milwaukee and Enid Ann Kimberly.He is survived by four sons, Richard (Therese ) of Scottsdale, Ariz.; Dan (Margaret) of Hinsdale, Ill.; John (Amy Lewis) of Stillwater, Minn.; Thomas, of Oshkosh; three daughters, Ann, of Lake Barrington, Ill.; Sally (Brad) Lehman of North Canton, Ohio; Priscilla (Jerry Lasky) of Essex Junction, Vt.; 13 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Mr. Kimberly graduated from Oshkosh High School, attended Williams College in Massachusetts and graduated with a bachelor of arts degree from Lawrence University, Appleton, Wis. Three days later he entered the U. S. Army as a private. He served with the First U.S. Army in Europe during the Second World War, where he received five battle stars and was honored with a Bronze Star for action during the Battle of the Bulge. He was discharged as a major. In 1996, on the 50th anniversary of the Normandy Invasion, he was presented with the Normandy Award by the City of Caen, France.After the war, he did every job in the factory at the Morgan Company, retiring after 38 years of service as president of the companys three divisions in Oshkosh; Chicago, Ill.; and Baltimore, Md. He was a member and ordained elder of the First Presbyterian Church.An active civic volunteer, Mr. Kimberly served as director, chairman or trustee on the boards of Mercy Medical Center (1953 through 1986), retiring with the title of chairman emeritus; Lawrence University for 25 years, retiring with the title of director emeritus; Firstar Bank - Oshkosh (now U.S. Bancorp); Bergstrom Paper Company; Wisconsin National Life Insurance Company; Associated Industries (president); Oshkosh Association of Manufacturing and Commerce (now the Oshkosh Area Chamber of Commerce); Oshkosh United Way (chairman); the National Woodwork Manufacturers Association; the Ponderosa Pine Association; Public Expenditures Survey of Wisconsin; Wisconsin Chapter of the American Automobile Association; Bay Lakes Boy Scout Council; Taxpayers Association of Oshkosh; the U.S. Office of Emergency Preparedness, Washington, D.C. (1970-1973); the Community Blood Bank, which supplies all blood to Mercy Medical Center; and the Oshkosh Education Endowment Fund. He also served on the Red Carpet Committee that formed to persuade the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) to move its convention and fly-in to Oshkosh in 1970 and its headquarters and museum to Oshkosh in 1983. In addition, he served as a holiday bell-ringer for the Salvation Army for 52 years.During his extensive volunteer career, Mr. Kimberly was honored by Mercy Medical Center as a Healthcare Hero; Our Lady of Lourdes Award for Civic Service; Oshkosh High School as Outstanding Alumnus; the EAA as recipient of the Presidents Award as well as The Award for Major Achievement. He was also named volunteer emeritus of the EAA and received the State of Wisconsin Governors Award, presented by Governor Lee Dreyfus in 1982.In 2004, he was inducted into the Wisconsin Business Hall of Fame and presented with the Laureate Eagle, sponsored by Junior Achievement of Wisconsin, Inc., and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Mr. Kimberly was also an active fundraiser, having served as the co-chairman of the original drive to build the Oshkosh YMCA; the original drive to expand Mercy Medical Center; the effort to fund the EAA headquarters and museum; the Friends of Steve Wittman drive to build the Steve Wittman Hangar at Whitman Field, Oshkosh; Oshkosh North High Schools campaign to purchase band uniforms; and the annual United Way.In addition, he was a member of the EAA and Foundation; the Inland Lakes Yachting Association (director and regatta chairperson); Oshkosh Yacht Club (commodore); and Oshkosh Rotary Club (president).Noting his extensive career as a civic volunteer, Mr. Kimberly often quoted his father: Always leave the woodpile a little bigger than you found it.Mr. Kimberly will be remembered for his devotion to his family, the annual Fourth of July parade and party that he hosted for his children, grandchildren, friends, neighbors and acquaintances - and for his bow ties.His family will greet visitors on Wednesday, Dec. 28, from 4 to 7 pm in the Kimberly Gallery at the EAA Museum and on Dec. 29 from 10 - 11 am at the First Presbyterian Church.
