Jack Lionell Carrick

Jack Lionell Carrick, 87, of Oshkosh, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2014. Jack was born January 15, 1927 in Racine, Wisconsin, to the late Edward and Mildred (Thomas) Carrick. Jack attended Oshkosh High School before enlisting in the United States Navy in 1944. While Jitterbugging at Oshkosh High School Jack met the love of his life, Arlene Tollard. Jack and Arlene were married in Waycross, Georgia on March 2, 1946 while Jack was serving in the United States Navy and stationed in Jacksonville, Florida. Jack and Arlene renewed their wedding vows several times during their life together. In addition to raising his family of seven children, Jack was employed in several lines of work throughout his life. Jack owned and operated Jacks Newsstand and Delicatessen on North Main Street in Oshkosh. He was also employed by the Oshkosh School District for many years and he retired from the United States Postal Service in 1989. Jack could truly be called a jack-of-all-trades. Jack was an active handyman, enjoyed woodcrafts, painting, and enjoyed giving his projects to family and friends. Jack and Arlene attended school and sporting events of their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren whenever possible. Jack especially enjoyed race weekends when he watched his sons Randy and Greg and grandson Troy compete. Arlene and Jack were fortunate to be able to travel extensively across the United States with their children and grandchildren. Jack was a proud veteran of the United States Navy and a Purple Heart recipient during World War II. He was a member of American Legion Cook-Fuller Post #70 of Oshkosh and served as the Post Chaplain for many years. Jack was a member of Saint Marks Evangelical Lutheran Church in Neenah. Jack was known as Dokes to his family and was well known to many in Oshkosh.Jack is survived by his children: Daniel (Gail), Green Bay; Linda Degner, Oshkosh; Patricia (Thomas) Wenzel, Oshkosh; Debra (David) Rupnow, Randolph; Gregory (Doreen), Iola; Randall (Tracie), Scandinavia; Anne (Michael) Langkau, Oshkosh; grandchildren: Michelle Degner; Todd Wenzel (special friend, Laura Zuege), Troy (Kerry) Wenzel, Timothy (Julie) Wenzel, Tricia (Adam) Voss; Amanda (Jason) Freeman, Kristen Hammes, Harlan, Jr. (Jessica) Eckstein; Hunter, Noah, and Kasandra Carrick; Keegan (Abby) Langkau, Piper Langkau; step-grandchildren: Dawn (Gregory) Austin, Debra (David) Stauffacher; Adam (Nicole) Norder; 12 great-grandchildren, four step-great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter. Jack is further survived by his brother Arvid Bud (Antonella) Carrick of Oshkosh; sister-in-law Bethel Reinke of Oshkosh; and sister-in-law Shirley (Stanley) Domack of Morrison, Illinois. Jack was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Arlene; by his brothers Charles, Edward Bill, David, and Howard Jerry; sister Joyce Last; sister-in-law Margaret Christine Kropp; sister-in-law Charlotte Miller; son-in-law Frederick Degner; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.A Memorial Service for Jack will be held on Saturday, July 26, 2014 at 11 A.M. at Saint Marks Evangelical Lutheran Church, 140 S. Green Bay Road, Neenah, WI, with Pastor Stephen W. Dietzler officiating. Visitation will be held from 9 A.M. until the time of service. Following the luncheon, interment will be at Peace Lutheran Cemetery in Oshkosh with Full Military Honors. Jacks family would like to thank the nurses at Century Oaks Building 3 and Heartland Hospice, especially Deb, Stephanie, Ruth, and David for all of the care and compassion they gave to him over the last several months. A memorial fund has been established in Jacks name.
