James Arthur Martell

James A. Red Martell, age 83, died Wednesday September 26, 2012 at Oakwood Manor. He was born November 13, 1928 in Ripon a son of Irving and Laura Berndt Martell. He attended Ripon schools graduating in 1946. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the 11th Airborne Division in the Far East. He attended UW-Madison. In June 1952 he married Kathryn Peppler.He is survived by his loving wife Kathryn, one son, Steven Martell, two daughters Nancy (Kevin) Jahnke all of Oshkosh, Jean (Dan) Thompson of Greendale, WI, and three grandchildren Mallory and Andrew Thompson and Benjamin Jahnke. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Arden and an infant daughter Louise.He was employed at Bucyrus Erie for 34 years at their plants in South Milwaukee, Evansville, Indiana, Erie, Pennsylvania, and Everett, Washington. He retired in 1993 and moved to Oshkosh in 1994.He was a sportsman all his life. He loved golfing with the Utica 18 hole Wednesday Golf league with his son, son-in-laws and grandson. He was a fisherman and an avid Badger and Packer fan. When his grandson, Andrew, played for UW-Oshkosh he loved watching, or listening to the games on the radio.He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and served on various boards, ushered, played dart ball and mowed lawns in the summer.He loved his family and was a good husband and father, but when his grandchildren came is when he really shined. He loved his granddaughter, Mallory, coming weekly for meals and he was so proud of her graduating from UW-Oshkosh in Accounting, sports activities with his grandson Andrew and was a huge Autism advocate for his grandson, Benjamin.His memorial service will be held on Thursday October 4, 2012 at 11 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church 338 N. Eagle St. with Rev. David Pagel officiating. Visitation will be held on Wednesday October 3, 2012 at Konrad-Behlman Funeral Home-Westside from 4-6 p.m. and at the church on Thursday one hour prior to the memorial service. Military honors will be performed at the funeral home on Wednesday at 5:45 p.m. Inurnment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery in Ripon. In lieu of flowers a memorial will be established in James name for Autism, Diabetes and Cancer Research.Thank you to Oakwood Manor staff and Heartland Hospice for all their wonderful loving care for him.
