James Jimmy Elwing, 87, of Oshkosh passed away Monday February 25, 2013 at Mercy Medical Center. He was born May 28, 1925 in Oostburg, WI a son of Edward and Ruth Elwing. Jim joined the Navy in 1942 and served 20 years. He was aboard the aircraft carrier, Princeton CVL-23, when it was dive bombed off Leyte Gulf and sank. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in battle. He also served 4 tours of duty on the SS St. Paul CA-73. He was a WWII and Korean War veteran, was a Boatswain Mate First Class, and was very proud of his service to his country. On November 20, 1960 Jim married Haruko Penny Nakashima at the U.S. Consulate in Yokohama, Japan. Penny preceded him in death on November 16, 2011 after 51 years of marriage. After being honorably discharged from the Navy, Jim worked at Rockwell for 24 years, retiring in 1986. Left to mourn Jims passing are his daughter, Faith, granddaughter, Heather, and great-grandson, Justus Elwing all of Sarasota, FL together with Mike Sammons, his friend of many years. His parents and all his siblings have preceded him in death.As per Jims wishes there will be no funeral arrangements. He will be cremated and placed next to his wife, Penny. Jim has pulled anchor here in life and has set sail in the blue seas of heaven in search of his beloved, Penny. I am sure she is just over the horizon. Gosh they must have a lot to talk about.
