Janet Alberta Shepherd

October 12, 1918 — December 15, 2011

Mrs. Janet Jan Alberta Swope Shepherd passed peacefully into Heaven on December 15, 2011, after a brief illness.She was born on October 12, 1918 to Walter Armstrong Swope and Alice Gravold Swope, and grew up on Monroe Street, attended Dale School and graduated from Oshkosh High in 1936. She attended business college in Oshkosh, and soon after, became the secretary to Mr. Harry Miller at Wisconsin Public Service, where she worked until 1960.During World War II, Janet served in the WAVES, and was stationed near Coeur dAlene, Idaho. One of her greatest adventures was driving from Wisconsin to Idaho with a few of her friends who also volunteered for wartime service. Janet was a lifelong active member of First Presbyterian Church, where she sang in the choir, and where she met Dr. William Shepherd. She was also a member of the Ponkapoag, Campfire Group. She was also an accompanist in her teens and twenties for Juanita Marie Arnos School of the Dance. Janet married Dr. William D. Shepherd in Oshkosh, February 20, 1960. They honeymooned in Biloxi, Mississippi, and returned there many times on Easter vacations over the years. Dr. Shepherd had called Biloxi home for a few years in his teens.Janet loved to play the piano, knit and sew, and she was also accomplished at cross-stitch and needlepoint. She was an excellent cook and baker as well. She also wrote a book which was published as Not New Now, a history of some of Oshkoshs most famous homes.Janet is survived by her husband and one daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Danny Marin, and three grandchildren, Carolyn, Janna and William. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother and sister-in-law, Gerald and Adeline Swope.Services will be held at Konrad-Behlman Funeral Home, (Westside) on Tuesday, December 20, 2011 at 4:00 PM with the Rev. Tom Willadsen officiating. Family and friends may visit at the funeral home on Tuesday from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM.The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the loving, wonderful staff and nurses at Evergreen Retirement Community and Sharehaven Center.
