Joan Olive Higley

Joan Olive Higley, born September 26, 1934, in the township of Albion near Eleva, WI. Joan the daughter of Oscar and Sophie (Boe) Engen. On June 29, 1963 she was married to Marvin H. Higley. Following their marriage they moved to Oshkosh, WI.Joan was always active in the Church. She was baptized and confirmed at Eleva Lutheran Church, as well as working there as part-time secretary and treasurer for several years following high school. Joan then moved to Minneapolis, MN where she worked for the American Lutheran Church.Upon moving to Oshkosh, Joan continued to be active in the Church, where she and Marvin were members of Our Saviors Lutheran Church for over 52 years. Over the years she; taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, helped start Peter Pan Nursery School, was a member of Mary Circle and WELCA, and was active with the Library Committee for over 40 years.Joan was employed at Oshkosh North High School as a Media Aide from 1977 to her retirement in 1997. She enjoyed helping students, staff, and was always willing to help them find resources for whatever topic they needed.Joan and Marvin enjoyed camping and for over 25 years spent most of their summers at their trailer near Boulder Junction, WI. Joan enjoyed the scenery and wildlife (especially the loons) and making friends at the campground and at their up north church, Boulder Junction Community Church.Joan is survived by her husband Marvin, stepson Samuel Higley, son Mark (Julie) Higley and grandson Noah, as well as 1 niece, 2 nephews, several great nieces and nephews, and special friends Jim and Devon Pedersen and family. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Helaine, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.Joan was always reaching out in kindness to people who were lonely or hurting, sharing Christs love with them and providing a caring listening ear. She will be missed by her family and her many friends.A funeral service for Joan will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 4, 2015 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church (1860 Wisconsin St.) with Rev. Arnold R. Bolin officiating. Visitation will be held at church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service. Inurnment will be at Eleva Lutheran Cemetery at a later date.
