Joan Wallach Shoemaker

March 21, 1927 — March 27, 2016

Joan Shoemaker (Joan, mom, Grammy), passed away peacefully at Evergreen Retirement Community on March 27, 2016. She was born on March 21, 1927 in Highland Park, Illinois to Marvin and Bernice Wallach. Joan was born in Highland Park, IL, graduated from Highland Park High School and earned her Bachelors degree from Lake Forest College where she met and married Richard Shoemaker. While mostly a stay at home mom to raise her four children, Joan also enjoyed her time spent teaching children with special needs and as an administrative assistant for Mercury Marine in Fond du Lac. While her family and friends were most important to Joan, she also had many other interests over the years. She enjoyed reading, counter cross stitching, fishing, genealogy and gardening. She loved to travel and always wanted to learn new things. While physically challenged over the past few years, she loved playing scrabble, dominoes and other activities with her friends Evergreen. Joan is survived by her children: Rick Shoemaker of Highland Park, IL, Ann (Alexander)Brigham of Bremerton, WA, and David (Wendy) Shoemaker of Oshkosh, WI; son in law: Bill Gavin of Palatine, IL; grandchildren: Dan Gavin, Tim (Megan ) Gavin, and Peter (Anne) Gavin all of Palatine, IL, Haley Shoemaker of Irvine, CA, Mackenzie Shoemaker of Santa Cruz, CA, and Katherine Alexander of Bremerton, WA; great grandson Jackson Gavin of Palatine, IL. Joan was preceded in death by her parents: Marvin & Bernice Wallach; husband: Richard Shoemaker; and daughter: Robin Shoemaker-Gavin.A memorial service for Joan will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 2, 2016 at Evergreen Retirement Community (1130 N. Westfield St.) with Pastor Nancy Green officiating. Visitation will be held at Evergreen from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Joans inurnment will be at Forest Home Cemetery in Milwaukee, WI at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please send donations on her behalf to Evergreen Retirement Community.The family wishes to extend a special Thank You to the Evergreen staff for taking such great care of mom for the past 7 years.
