Johan A. Mathison, Md

March 24, 1936 — February 23, 2017

Johan Alfred Mathison MD, 80, of Oshkosh and Phillips, died peacefully at his home on February 23, 2017. His wife, Sally, and his three children were by his side. Johan was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on March 24, 1936, the son of Magnus and Margit (Hansen) Mathison and married Sally Anna Yoran on October 16,1965. From a very young age, Johan knew he wanted to be a doctor. He went on to receive both his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Wisconsin in Madison. After completing his internship at Milwaukee County Hospital, he served as a Captain and General Medical Officer in the Special Forces Unit of the U.S. Army in Okinawa and Vietnam. Johan began his residency at Milwaukee County Hospital and completed it as chief resident at the VA Medical Center. Johan and his family moved to Oshkosh in 1969, where he went into private practice in General Surgery for the next 31 years. Sensing the importance of duty to his field, he was Chief of Surgery, Chief of Staff and managed the ER at Mercy Medical Center in Oshkosh. Likewise, he was an active member of the American College of Surgeons, County and State Medical Societies and served on the board of the University of Wisconsin Medical Alumni Association. Within our Oshkosh community, Johan impacted many athletes lives as the team physician for Oshkosh North and West high schools. He was recognized by the WIAA for his many years of caring service. Johan was a member of First English Lutheran church where he served on the church council and other committees. In 1979, Johan purchased a cottage and land in Phillips, and he always felt fortunate he was able to borrow a piece of Gods creation for awhile. This property has been the center of family gatherings for nearly four decades. It was also there that a family tradition started when he purchased a fire truck and drove it in July 4th parades for more than 20 years. His years were filled with travel to all seven continents, attending many Packer and Badger games, daily journaling/reading, and enjoying his grandchildrens many activities. Johan is survived by his devoted wife Sally; his son, Steven (Mary) Mathison and their children: Ella, Jack, Kristen; his daughters, Karen (Todd) Brandt and their children: Erika, John, Jenna; and Erika (Don) Flynn and their children: Julia, Maria, Blake. He is also survived by his siblings: Harvey (Betty) Mathison, Karen (Chlorn) Petersen, Dennis (Elaine) Mathison, and brother-in-law, Darwin (Vinniemae) Yoran, and many cherished nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents and brother-in-law, John David Thurman. We will especially remember our husband and dad for his unwavering faith, strong principles, social nature and entertaining quips. We will all miss you dearly. Visitation will be held on Friday, March 10th at Konrad-Behlman Funeral Home (Westside) from 5-8pm and on Saturday, March 11th at First English Lutheran Church from 10am until the time of the service at 11am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First English, Bethel Home or Oshkosh Area Community Foundation (Johan Mathison, MD donor-advised fund) to provide medical services for the needy.
