John A. Pennau, 90, of Oshkosh passed away Thursday January 29, 2009 at Aurora Medical Center. John was born in Waushara County on September 8, 1918. He was the son of John and Linda (Kelpert) Pennau, both of whom are deceased. On January 24, 1948 he married Rita Loewen who survives him.He was a member of First Congregational Church in Oshkosh. John lived and attended school in Oshkosh. He graduated from Oshkosh High School in 1936. He worked for many years for his father in a family owned heating equipment and appliance business. John enlisted in the United States Air Force in June 1941 and served our country for four and a half years during WWII returning to Oshkosh in November, 1945. During his tour of duty, he served as a bombardier on a B25 medium bomber in the CBI (China, Burma, India) Theatre. He flew over 50 missions, receiving the Air Medal and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He retired from the service as a major in the United States Air Force.After his service in the Air Force, he workedin the construction field. He was both management and project supervisor and then Vice President of Edward H. Meyer Construction Co. which later became Meyer Corporation based in Neenah, WI. In 1970 and 1971 he worked for Guiliani Construction Co. as project manager and purchasing agent for the construction of Park Plaza Mall in Oshkosh. Upon completion of Park Plaza Mall, he became a project manager for Oscar J. Boldt Construction Co. in Appleton, WI retiring in December 1984.John was a life member (66 years) of the Oshkosh Elks Lodge #292 and a life member (60 years) of the Cook-Fuller Post #70 of the American Legion.John is survived by his wife Rita of 61 years, a daughter Linda (Jeff) Weigandt, and a son John Pennau II, all of Oshkosh. He is further survived by four grandchildren, Ben (Jana) Weigandt, Oshkosh; Aaron Weigandt, Oshkosh; Jonathan Weigandt, Chicago, IL; Sarah Weigandt, Oshkosh; one brother, James (Wendy) Pennau, Fond du Lac; one brother-in-law, Arlis Morrison, Corpus Christi, TX; two sisters-in-law, Janice Pennau, Oshkosh; Audrey Pennau, Pilot Point, TX; one special cousin, Nancy Block, Falls Church, VA, and many nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his parents, one sister Audrey Morrison and two brothers Karl Pennau and Richard Pennau.At Johns request, a private service will be held. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established for First Congregational Church, 137 Algoma Blvd. Oshkosh, WI 54901.
