John E. Nevers

John E. Nevers died peacefully on Monday morning, March 16, 2009 at Evergreen Retirement Community. He was born March 1, 1912 in Moose Lake, Minnesota, the only child of John S. and Minnie Nevers. He grew up in Superior and Ashland and graduated from Ashland High School before attending college. Majoring in physical education, he received a Bachelors degree at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and a Masters degree from the University of Iowa, Ames, Iowa. On July 19, 1941 he married Eileen Murray in Carleton, Minnesota. Mr. Nevers taught in a number of high schools in Wisconsin before settling in Oshkosh. His keen interest in athletics, especially football, and physical education was felt by the many young people with whom he worked. This enthusiasm was honored by the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse by electing him an outstanding alumnus and a member of the Wall of Excellence. He was a life-time member and officer of WAHPER (Wisconsin Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation). He served as Director for Health, Physical Education and Safety for the Oshkosh City Schools for 20 years. He was also a sixty year member of St. Peters Faith Community. Mr. Nevers is survived by his wife Eileen and their children Mary, Oshkosh; Patricia, Hamburg, Germany; and Thomas and his wife Lee Anne, Tucson, Arizona, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. The family is deeply grateful to Johns many friends and to the caretakers at Evergreen who generously helped him during his illness.A memorial mass will be conducted by Father James Jugenheimer at 11 AM on Saturday March 21, 2009 at the St. Peters site of the Most Blessed Sacrament parish. Family and friends can call at the church from 10 AM until the time of the mass. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established.
