John F Montag

August 15, 1922 — March 30, 2006

John F. Jack Montag Jr., age 83, of Oshkosh, died Thursday March 30, 2006 at his residence. He was born August 15, 1922 to John F. Montag and Esther Emilie Schroeder in Oshkosh. John attended Oakwood Elementary School, a one room school house, from first through eighth grade and graduated from Oshkosh High School in 1940. He served time in the U.S. Army, during WWII, in heavy weapons and the Counter Intelligence Corps. After returning from service he attended North Central University for two years.While at North Central he met Alice Everly and they were married on Feb. 14, 1951 at Oshkosh Gospel Tabernacle. To this union was born Linda, Karen, and Mark. Jack married Colleen Haffner Roach on August 30, 1986 in Wichita, KS. Jacks work from 1940 to 1966 was with the American Excelsior Corp. and then for the U.S. Post Office as a Postal Clerk from 1967 until he retired in 1984. He had many interests such as fishing, traveling, and camping with his family. At one time in the 1940s he kept seventeen bee hives and sold honey in bottles and combs. He enjoyed photography from a young age, starting with a 49c camera, making postage size prints. He had a photo class in service and worked with the college yearbook team taking and developing many pictures. In the last few years he was able to enjoy the new digital camera and computer picture making format. Jack did most of the work building his home on the two acres divided by Honey Creek. While his children were growing up they housed many animals in the little red barn, such as bantam chickens, geese, a donkey, a horse, goats, tame raccoons, etc. He enjoyed aviation from model building to later building an ultralight airplane and flying that at the age of 60. In the later years he enjoyed flying with his son, Mark, in his plane. Jack loved his children and grandchildren and was proud of all of them. He is survived by his wife, Colleen; two daughters, Linda (Ron) Montag-Olson of Zionsville, IN and Karen (James) Kersting of Connorsville, WI; a son Mark W. (Deb) Montag of Pine River; two step-sons Gerald (Kiana) Roach and Duane (Robin) Roach both of Wichita, KS; 11 grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; and two sisters Lois (Fred) Cool of Larslan, MT and Joanne (John) Ohlin of Springfield, MO. Funeral services for Jack will be held Monday April 3, 2006 at 11:00 AM at New Life Community Church, Rev. Mark Elliott officiating. Family and friends may call at the church on Monday from 9:30 AM until the service. Burial will be in Spencer Lake Memorial Cemetery near Waupaca. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established to the New Life Community Church Building Fund. Jacks family would like to thank the Affinity Hospice staff for all their care and concern.
