An environmentalist and conservationist before the terms were well known, John Peter Jungbacker left this world a better place on Friday, October 29, 2010.Jack was an only child born to Maria and John Jungbacker, each of whom had independently emigrated from Germany. Jack was born in 1924 and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan where his father was a furniture craftsman. When Jack was twelve, his father died and he then embarked on his many and varied careers helping the family economy. He was an afternoon butcher's assistant, a movie usher, an airplane riveter in California, a forest manager of 150,000 acres in Roseburg, Oregon, a lumber broker and Director of Purchasing at Pluswood Industries. His favorite career was father to J. Peter Jungbacker (Karola Hillenbrand) and Judy Kneubuehl (Spencer) of Houston, Texas. He was grandfather to Lisa Kneubuehl (Houston), and Ian, Kiernan, Brittany, Logan Jungbacker; all of Oshkosh, WI and Erik Jugbacker (Maggie) of New Orleans, LA. He was very proud to be the great grandfather of Miles Emmett Jungbacker also of New Orleans, LA.A man who valued education, Jack received a BS and MS in forestry from Michigan State University. He wore his class ring proudly. Despite his son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren having degrees from UW Madison, he delighted in the "Spartan-Badger" rivalry, good naturedly rooting for the Badgers only when they played "others".While at Michigan State, he met Lois Weller of Bay City, MI. They married in 1948 and celebrated their 57th anniversary before Lois preceeded him in death in 2005.A memorial service will be held on November 20, 2010 beginning at 3:00 P.M. at the First Presbyterian Church, 110 Church Avenue, Oshkosh, WI.Jack was a man who enjoyed meeting and befriending people. He was known to quickly endear himself to new acquaintances making them feel like fast friends. Among his many dear friends were the staff of Bella Vista Manor whose kindness and good humor were a great source of comfort to him as his health declined. Keeping him constant company over his last days were, Peter, Karola and the Ally hospice nurses. Rest in Peace, Jack. You were a man well and truly loved.
