Joseph Albert Averkamp

Joseph Albert Averkamp, 82, township of Algoma, peacefully passed away on Thursday, January 30, 2014 at Mercy Medical Center. Joe was born May 18th, 1931, the seventh of ten children to Anthony Bernard Averkamp and Catherine (Reuter) Averkamp of Dickeyville, WI.Joe enlisted into the US Army and attended Infantry Basic Training at Ft. Breckenridge, Kentucky on August 29, 1948 prior to transitioning to Ft. Bragg, North Carolina for Advanced Infantry Training (AIT). After AIT, he spent a short time at Ft. Dix, New Jersey, before leaving for Bremerhaven, Germany; and, later to Vanberg, Germany. Joe transitioned to the 1st Infantry 26th Regimen Combat Team positioned in Colberg, Germany, on the Czech border. When the Korean War broke out on June 25, 1950, Joe was reassigned to Korea serving as a Platoon Sergeant until being Honorably Discharged in August of 1952.Joe married Catherine Donna Faye Volk on June 23rd, 1956 at St. Lukes Catholic Church in Plain, WI. Joe and Donna shared a loving 52 years together. Joe spent his entire career working in the crushed stone industry beginning with Ed Kramer & Sons of Plain, WI. In 1971, he moved his family to Oshkosh WI, eventually becoming manager of the Vulcan Materials Knapp St. Quarry where he became known as the Stone Man. He crushed and sold millions of tons of stone from the quarry during the growth of Oshkosh until his retirement from Vulcan in 1993. Joe had a great love for the outdoors hunting, fishing, and working the fields on the Cowan Dairy Farms. Joe always had a project to work on and there wasnt a machine or a vehicle he couldnt fix. He enjoyed sharing his knowledge with his children, grandchildren, family, friends, and anyone willing to listen, work hard, and take Joes subtle ribbing - listening was key, Joe was only going to tell you once.Joe is survived by all nine of his children: Dale (Sue) Averkamp of Goodyear, AZ; Dean (Cheryl) Averkamp of Wonder Lake, IL; Dan (Lisa) Averkamp of Hilbert, WI; Kathleen (Jeff) Olson of Oshkosh; Doug (Beth) Averkamp of Lake Geneva, WI; Dewy (Pam) Averkamp of Hartford, WI; Dave (Sarah) Averkamp of Oshkosh; Michleen (Kelly) Bishop of Plainfield, IL; Joleen (Erik) Anderson of Oshkosh; sixteen grandchildren; and, one great grandchild. Joe has one surviving sister, Kathleen Geltz of Marinette, WI, and many nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors. He was preceded in death by his wife, Donna (May, 2008), his parents, and siblings Gen, Margie, Ed, Marie, Ben, Denny, Lucy, and Gene.A memorial service with Military Honors will be held on Friday, February 7th, 2014 at 2:00pm at the Konrad-Behlman Funeral Home (Westside) with Father Matt Simonar officiating. Joes family will receive family and friends at the funeral home starting at 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The family wishes to acknowledge and extend our sincere gratitude for the compassion and respect provided to our father and ourselves, by the Mercy Medical Center ICU team and 2nd floor nursing staff.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Military Veterans Museum of Wisconsin Fields Of Honor, P.O.
