A proud Irishman, Joseph “Joe” A. Walsh, age 87, passed away on March 1, 2018 at his residence. He was born on March 10, 1930 in Lannon, WI to Richard and Anna Walsh. Joe married Nancy McGrath on August 19, 1967 at St. Peter’s Church in Oshkosh.
After graduating from high school, Joe started college at Oshkosh Teacher’s College. He served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1950 to 1954. After returning, Joe finished school and graduated from UW–Oshkosh with a bachelor’s degree in teaching.
He spent his career in education, from truant officer to high school history teacher. He taught at Oshkosh North High School from the day it opened until his retirement in 1992. He fed his passion for history through reading, his role as family genealogist, and his ideas for family trips.
Joe is survived by his wife, Nancy; son, Colin (Jennifer) Walsh; daughters, Meghan Walsh (Charles Putzer) and Kerry Walsh (Tom Meyer); three grandchildren: Maura and Sam Putzer and Eamon Walsh; sister, Katie Lund; sister-in-law, Mary McGrath (Loraine Samsel); and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; five sisters; and four brothers.
A funeral mass for Joe will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 8, 2018, at Most Blessed Sacrament - St. Peter Church (435 High Ave., Oshkosh) with Fr. Jerry Pastors officiating. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Full military honors will be held at the church following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are encouraged to Old Glory Honor Flight or Milwaukee Irish Fest Foundation.
The family would like to send a special thank you to Heartland Hospice, especially Christine and Aime, Cheryl Fleck at Ascension Diabetes and Endocrine Center, and Dr. Ammar Alzoubi at Aurora Medical Center.
