Kay Kumbier, 72 of Oshkosh, passed away quietly at home after a long battle with Lupus and Scleroderma. She will be missed very much by all of those she touched in life.Kay was born in Oshkosh on December 31, 1934 the daughter of Herbert and May Hartwell Himmler. Being a child of the Great Depression, she learned at an early age the value of hard work. She attended St. Peter Catholic School and graduated from Oshkosh High School. She married Darriel Kumbier Sr. at the age of 18 and while he went off to serve his country in the Korean Conflict she resided in the Ripon area where she worked as a nurse. After Darriel returned from service, they settled down to raising their children. Their love and devotion is still felt by their children today; we were truly lucky to have such great parents. Kay is survived by her four children; Darriel (Nancy) Kumbier, Jr., Steven (Victoria) Kumbier, Cathy (David) Donner, and Russell (Kristi) Kumbier. She is also survived by ten grandchildren, a great grandchild, brothers, Robert (Janet) Himmler and Leonard (Karen) Himmler, and a sister, Dorothy Butler. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, brothers, Herbert Jr. and Harry, and sisters, Agnes Fink and Ellen Ruedinger.Kay was an active member of the First English Lutheran Church in Oshkosh. She participated in worship, a womens circle and the Senior Choir. On many Sundays she praised God with her beautiful voice. Her trademark song was How Great Thou Art a song she sang from the heart every time. Her church family and God were always important in her life.Kay resumed her nursing career after her youngest children entered school, employed by Mercy Medical Center. She worked the floor for many years, and then went on to be a monitor technician, a position she retired from when the Lupus made it too difficult to work anymore. She met so many people and co-workers during her many years at Mercy who touched her life. Kay had a gift of always seeing the good in everyone. She made many friends during her years there and if you knew Kay, she probably spoke of you. Kay was truly a gift to all who met her; a gift her children truly will always thank God we were lucky enough to be given. She was so talented, not only in voice, but her beautiful artistic talents. She spent many hours crafting flower arrangements and ceramics that she showered upon all she knew. The family would also like to thank her niece, Alice Lammeman, her granddaughter and husband, Wendy and Scott Wilke, Ron LaBorde and family, Mary Hanks, Megan Lembcke and Rosina Wenhardt for their devoted love and support to Mother. In the end, Hospice Care took such good care of Mother, and she wanted all of you to know how much she appreciated your devotion. Home Instead staff also cared for Mother and made her end-time so much better with their caregivers, specifically Tina and Regina. Her son, Steve, was there to the end, letting Mom know that all her children were there with her in spirit. Her funeral will be Friday June 29, 2007 at 11:00 AM at the First English Lutheran Church with the Rev. Nancy Krueger officiating. Burial will be in the Oaklawn Cemetery next to her beloved husband, Darriel. Family and friends many call at the church on Friday from 9:00 AM until the time of the funeral. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the First English Lutheran Church, Women of the Church.Mom, we love you and miss you. We will see you again one day in our Lords House. Until then, you will live on in our hearts.
