L. Delmer Piel, 89, of Oshkosh died Sunday, November 23, 2014, at Evergreen Retirement Community. He was born February 9, 1925, in Oshkosh, a son of the late Walter and Edith (Erickson) Piel. Del was a WWII veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy from April 1943 February 1946. During this time he and his sweetheart Edith Derber exchanged letters daily. They married on September 17, 1946, in Oshkosh. He received a B. S. degree in Horticulture from UW-Madison. Del was the commercial vegetable production manager at the Leech Farms and the Hull Co. Inc. Later he became Grounds Supervisor for UW-Oshkosh. He especially enjoyed baseball, helped to develop and maintain area diamonds and was a loyal fan of various local teams. He enjoyed gardening, selling his produce at local farmers markets, and was an avid trapper and hunter. Together, he and his wife, Edith enjoyed playing cards with friends, travelling, golfing, and dancing.Del is survived by his wife, Edith of Oshkosh; two daughters, Nancy (Doug) Charles of Kewaunee and Linda (Tom) Kiser of Campbellsport; a son, James (Terry) Piel of Goffstown, NH; a sister, El Dona Schuster of Oshkosh; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Piel of Whitewater; six grandchildren, Jason (Leslie) Piel, John (Amber) Piel, Heather and Natalie Fischer, Amanda Kiser, and Amy (Tony) Sanders; and seven great-grandchildren: Lillian and Josephine Piel, Sameenah and Aleea Piel, and Aden, Amber, and Alexander Sanders; and nieces and nephews. He is further survived by his Chinese family, William (Kau) Shiu and his daughters Novan, Sylvia, Linda and sons Patrick, and Terry (Queenie) with granddaughter Cece. He was preceded in death by a brother, Vernon Piel; a brother and sister-in-law, Howard and Jessie Piel; and a brother-in-law, John Schuster; and great-granddaughter Ava Sanders.The family would like to express our heartfelt appreciation and gratitude for the loving care provided by staff from Home Instead Senior Care and Evergreen.Funeral services for Del will be held Monday, Dec. 1, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. at Martin Luther Ev. Lutheran Church, Rev. Jeff Berg officiating. Visitation will be held Sunday Nov. 30 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Konrad-Behlman Funeral Home-westside and at the church Monday from 9:00 a.m. until the service. Burial will be in Lake View Memorial Park. A memorial in memory of Del is being established.
