Laurance H. Larry Olmstead, 98 of Oshkosh, died Monday November 8, 2010 at his sons home, which was his home for the last nine months. He was born in Wheeling, WV on June 9, 1912 son of Elmer and Laura Holtz Olmstead. He married Marjorie Fleming on May 21, 1938 in Lafayette, IN. On April 12, 2003 he married Myrtle Lynch in Mesa, AZ. Marjorie and Myrtle both preceded Larry in death.Larry was a graduate of Purdue University in Lafayette, IN with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He had been employed as plant engineer for Electric Spray-it; R-Way Furniture; Kohler Co. and Volrath Co. from which he retired. He had been an active member of St. Luke United Methodist Church in Sheboygan, WI before moving to Oshkosh in 2005. He joined Plymouth Congregational Church in Oshkosh. He was an Eagle Scout; belonged to the Sheboygan YMCA and the Ys Mens Club; he had been an avid golfer for 83 years until he was 95 years old. He also enjoyed the outdoors and camping; constructing his own tent camper back in the 1950s before most campers were commercially available.He is survived by three sons, Laurance F. Olmstead of San Francisco, CA, Jeffrey (Sharon) Olmstead of Oshkosh, and Kenneth (Connie) Olmstead of Pittsburg, PA; eight grandchildren, Lori (Jack) Ballard of Alliance, OH, Jennifer (Luke) ONeill of Pittsburg, PA, Jeffrey (Angela) Olmstead of Houston, TX, Kimberly (Luke) Varner of Akron, OH, Wendy (Kevin) Verstegen of Sheboygan, WI, David Olmstead of Oshkosh, Kurt Olmstead of San Francisco, CA, and Marika Olmstead of San Jose, CA; eight great grandchildren, (with number Nine soon to be born), Erienne and Heather Ballard, Ethan, Halle, and Malea ONeill, Makenna Varner, Ashton and River Verstegen.Larrys Memorial Service will be Friday November 12, 2010 at 1:30 P.M. at Plymouth Congregational Church with Rev. Rick Hopkins officiating. Family and friends may call at the church on Friday from 12:30 until the time of the service. A memorial has been established.He was a very gentle and kind man. Larry was loved by everyone in the family and those who knew him. He will be greatly missed. We look forward to our reunion with him in heaven.In my Fathers house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
