Lavern Aloysius Ottman

January 21, 1926 — June 17, 2016

Lavern A. Ottman - OBITUARYFINAL 6/21/16 Lavern A. Ottman died Friday, June 17, 2016 at Park View Health Center in Oshkosh, following a long illness; he was 90 years old. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 68 years, Beverly (Martin) Ottman and children: Sue Ellen Ottman, Patricia (John) Fox, and John (Deborah) Ottman; his grandchildren: Elizabeth (Abdul) Oke, Amanda (Daniel) Nez, Michael, David and Brian Ottman; and three great-grandchildren. More affectionately known by family and long-time friends as Curly and by others as Vern, he was born and raised in Antigo, Wisconsin, the son of George and Louise (Fleischman) Ottman. He is preceded in death by his only sister, Deniece, and as he would often say, his favorite brother-in-law, Richard Roth, all of Oshkosh. Vern attended Oshkosh High School until January, 1944, when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving in North Africa, Italy and France during World War II. Following service, he moved to Milwaukee and completed his apprenticeship as a Steamfitter, a trade he would continue as a journeyman for 36 years. Devout in his Catholic faith and a member of the Knights of Columbus, he was a greeter for many years at Most Blessed Sacrament Church (St. Peters). An enthusiastic golfer, he carded three holes-in-one and enjoyed spending winters in Panama City Beach, FL. He loved to read, do the daily crossword puzzle, play bridge, pinochle, poker and cribbage. A trip to the casino was never turned down. Curly will leave lasting memories among family and friends for his values -- honesty, work ethic, acceptance of others, appreciation of simple things in life -- and his sense of humor. The family wishes to extend a very warm and special thank you to the staff at Park View Health Center for their extraordinary care, and for always treating him with such dignity, kindness and affection during his time there. A funeral mass will be celebrated at Most Blessed Sacrament Church (435 High Avenue, Oshkosh) on Saturday, June 25, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will take place before the service at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
