Lorenz Scherzer

Lorenz Scherzer Jr., 80, passed away at home with his family on Jan 6, 2015, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Gyorkony, Hungary, on December 21, 1934, to Lorenz Sr. and Eva (Wenhardt) Scherzer. He married and was preceded in death by his wife, of 29 years, Marietta (Hotchkiss), in 2000. He was further preceded in death by his parents, and his granddaughter, Meredith, in 2008.He is survived by his only son Lorenz III (Sara), his grandchildren Kaitlin (14), Dietrich (12), Arika (8), Lorenz IV (4), and Hans (2), three sisters Eva Williams (Palm Springs, CA), Rosina Wiedemann (Oakland, CA), and Kathryn Rieger (Oakland, CA). He is further survived by three step sons, Larry Lee Bidwell (Mary) of Owensboro, KY, Roy Bidwell of Oshkosh, WI, and Alan Bidwell (Mary) of Killeen, TX, grandchildren Josh Bidwell (Misty) of Owensboro, KY, Melissa (David) Tucker of Owensboro, KY.He was deported from Gyorkony, Hungary, with his family in 1946 by the communist Russians. They spent 14 days on a train not sure what the communists had planned. They wound up in Bavaria, Germany where they lived three years until being sponsored by a family in Lowell, WI. They moved to Oshkosh a few years later. He was in the United States Army from 1954 to 1957. Munich was the first city he and his family had the opportunity to get off the train after deportation, and it would also be one of the places he returned to over a decade later as a United State Soldier. He would occasionally contrast the difference between the war torn city and the rebuilt one he saw 10 years later. He enjoyed his grandkids immensely. He took them on excursions to the library, nature hikes, fishing, and out to eat which meant too much junk food. He often got creative with fun outdoor ideas in the backyard. For the last 15 years he, on numerous occasions, mentioned how these have been the best years of his life. He will be sorely missed, but especially by his grandchildren. He found his niche in the plating industry where he excelled for almost 30 years. He worked for Oshkosh Plating from its opening in 1980 until his retirement in 1996. Before that he was employed by All Plate until it closed. Services will be held at on Saturday, January 10, at Wyldewood Baptist Church. Visitation will be at 10:00am with services to follow at 11:00am, with Rev. Jason Brenenstuhl officiating.In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in Lorenzs name.
