Marlin Harold Brand

Marlin Harold Brand age 89 of Oshkosh died peacefully on January 16, 2016 at Eden Meadows Green House with his family by his side, after a long battle with cancer.Marlin was born in Menasha on December 13, 1926 to Harold and Mary (McDowell) Brand. He graduated from Menasha High School and enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II. He served in the Pacific and the Persian Gulf until 1946. Marlin was called again to duty and served during the Korean Conflict.In 1952 he married Ramona Mand and they celebrated 57 years of marriage and raised six children.Marlin began his work career as a Linotype operator with the Twin City News Record, the Milwaukee Sentinel and the Oshkosh Daily Northwestern. After leaving the newspaper business he worked as a purchaser at Mercury Marine, retiring in 1988.He also managed the Oshkosh Eagles Club and the Columbus Club. After retirement he worked in the pro shop at Westhaven Golf Club for 14 years.Marlin was a faithful member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, serving as Congregation President, sitting on various boards and committees as well as volunteering his time in the church purchasing office.He was a proud member of American Legion Cook-Fuller Post 70 serving until 2014 as Adjutant and was honored to participate in the Old Glory Honor Flight program in 2010.Marlin looked forward to visits from friends and family particularly his grandchildren and great grandchildren of whom he was very proud. He was a great fan of the Packers, Brewers and all sports on television and was an avid cribbage player. Marlin is survived by his children: Mary (Mark) Grubbs, David (Lori) Brand, Tom (Judy) Brand, Bill (Laurie) Brand, Amy (Norm) Spiegel and Matthew (Kristina) Brand. He is further survived by 25 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, 1 great -great grandchild, nieces, nephews and longtime friend Gloria Wachholz.He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Ramona, two sisters and brothers-in-law Ruth (Harold) Gillette, Helen (Ed) Winkelman and a niece Lynn Giese.Funeral services with full military honors will be held at Grace Ev. Lutheran Church 913 Nebraska St. on Saturday January 23rd at 12:00 PM with Pastor Chadwick Graham officiating. Visitation will be held from 9:00AM until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established.The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff and residents of Eden Meadows for the loving care and companionship they showed Marlin during the time he resided there. He truly enjoyed all his interaction with staff particularly his regular cribbage lessons with Deb and Sarah. Additionally, the family would like to thank the caregivers at Generations Home Care and Hospice.
