Marvin Felt Summerville Jr.

Marvin F. Summerville, Jr. formerly of Oshkosh, Wisconsin died Thursday, February 7th, 2019 at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King, Wisconsin. Marvin was born on June 15th, 1938 in Morris, Illinois, to Marvin Summerville, Sr. and Lillian (Browell) Summerville Bailey. He married Verna Marie Welch on June 3rd, 1961.
Marvin served for four years in the Air Force, a year and a half of which was in Tripoli, Libya in North Africa. In his career with the United States Postal Service Marvin advanced from clerk to Postmaster and retired from that position in Marion, Wisconsin. Marvin was an avid stamp and coin collector and also served in volunteer positions for several organizations. He was a Gideons International member for many years, serving the organization locally. He volunteered for the American Red Cross and traveled to New York after 9-11 to assist there, and also on a team supporting fire fighters in Arizona after a major forest fire.
Marvin’s volunteer commitment came to particular expression in his dedication to the Boy Scouts, where he served Troop 603 for 30 years as Scoutmaster, Committee Chair and Institutional Representative. During his time with Troop 603 he assisted boys in the troop to earn their First Aid Merit Badge through his knowledge and training with the Red Cross. Marvin earned his Woodbadge beads and then continued to serve as staff for Scoutmaster Training. Among other honors he was presented with the District Award of Merit and the Silver Beaver, the council-level distinguished service award. Marvin also was a Vigil Honor member of the Order of the Arrow, the National Honor Society of the Boy Scouts of America.
Marvin is survived by his wife, Verna, and their three children: Mark (Michelle) Summerville, Laura Holevatz, and Elizabeth (James) Schmude. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his brother, Robert Summerville; his sister, Dixie Summerville; and a granddaughter, Shannon Marie Johnson.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Zion Lutheran Church, 400 N Sawyer St, Oshkosh, Wisconsin on Saturday, February 16th, 2019 at 1:30pm. Family and friends are invited to gather following the service for fellowship and remembrance.
In lieu of flowers memorials can be given in Marvin’s memory to the organizations within the community which he valued.
