Max William Fenzl, 88, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 11, 2011. After cheating death on numerous occasions for the past twelve years, Max lost his race with Father Time. Max was born on May 20, 1922 the son of Max J. and Emma (Drexler) Fenzl. He attended Sacred Heart School and graduated from Oshkosh High in 1940.After high school Max worked in the Maintenance Department at Paine Lumber Co until his induction into the US Army on October 13, 1942. While in the Army Max served in the Aleutian Islands and Pacific until his discharge in January of 1946. Max spent his leisure time in the Army excelling in gymnastics and body building. Max then joined the Army Reserves in 1948 and served honorably for 34 years, retiring in 1982 as a First Sergeant. After his discharge from active duty Max worked as a Letter Carrier, a Guard at Waupun Correctional for several years and was Owner/Operator of the Driftwood Tavern before eventually purchasing Keenline Conveyors, serving as President until he retired. Max was also a member of the AMVETS Post 7, the DAV, the American Legion and St. Jude the Apostle.In his youth Max spent his summers swimming in the south side quarries and sailing on Lake Winnebago. In the winter he ice boated on the Big Lake. As Max grew older he dabbled with hunting and fishing and played a little golf. He was a big Johnny Cash fan and loved watching John Wayne movies. Playing poker, going on casino runs and chewing the rag with his former Army cronies, known by all as The Dirty Dozen were always great times but nothing meant more to Max than his love for his companion, Avis Hazen. They danced, laughed and loved until Avis passing two years ago. Maxs love for Avis never faded. Max was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Curt; sisters, Jeanette, Doris and Phyllis; brother, Donald; long time companion, Avis; and canine sidekick of 19 years, Pepper.Surviving Max are a son, Chris (Debbie) Fenzl; grandson, J.C. (Sonya) Fenzl; sister, Germaine (Bud) Schaefer; Avis daughters, Wendy and Jackie and many nieces and nephews.A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, May 16, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Jude the Apostle - Sacred Heart Church (Knapp Street) with Fr. Matt Simonar as celebrant. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to the Mass. Entombment will be at Lake View Memorial Park with full Military Honors. In lieu of flowers please make a donation in Maxs name to the St. Judes Childrens Hospital (St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105 ).Maxs family would like to thank the ICU Staff at Aurora Medical Center and the Aurora Visiting Nurses.
