Melvin (Mel) N. Charles, 86, of Oshkosh died Wednesday December 16, 2009 at Vallhaven Care Center, Neenah. He was born March 7, 1923 in Green Bay the son of the late Anthony and Meta Woller Charles. Mel married his high school sweetheart, LaVerne A. Judkins on December 4, 1942 in Oshkosh. Mel had worked at Wadhams, the Leach Company, Universal Foundry, before he started his own business TV Antennas & Service out of his home on Oregon St. Road in the early 1950s. Prior to his retirement, Mel owned and operated Authorized TV with his son Thomas. After retirement, Mel enjoyed many years of working part-time at the American Legion. He was a WWII Army veteran. He was a past member, for many years and president of the Lakeshore Lions Club, member of the Otter Street Fishing Club, formerly served on the Oshkosh School Board and was a member of AOPA (Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association). Mel enjoyed flying his airplane, traveling, fishing, golfing, and was an avid Packer fan. He is survived by his wife LaVerne Charles of Oshkosh; a son Thomas (Barbara) Charles of Oshkosh; a daughter Ren (Val) Palmer of Oshkosh; five grandchildren, Shawn (Sarah Beth) Palmer, Alisa (Paul) Matthies, Christopher (Cheryl) Charles, Aaron (Sarah Anne) Palmer, and Kimberly (Justin) Mueller; and eight great-grandchildren Alec, Joshua, Ross, Nathaniel, Gabriel, Kaia, Ezra and Zoe. He was preceded in death by a son, Joseph, his sister and brother-in-law Madeline and Orville Beduhn and his step-father Carl Bradley. A memorial service for Melvin will be held Monday Dec. 21, 2009 at 5:45 PM at Konrad-Behlman Funeral Home-Westside, Bishop Timothy Kakuschke officiating. Visitation will be at the Lake Pointe Dr. funeral home from 4:45 PM until the service. Inurnment will be in Lake View Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers a memorial is being established for Milwaukee Childrens Hospital. Melvin's family would like to thank the staff at Theda Care Hospice, the staff at Vallhaven Care Center and Dr. Steven Maassen for all of the care and help given.
