Merlin W. Loberg

April 26, 1925 — January 1, 2022

Merlin Wayne Loberg, age 96 of Appleton, passed peacefully into the loving arms of Jesus in heaven on Saturday, January 1, 2022. Merlin was born at home on April 26, 1925, in Nelsonville, WI to the late Johan and Luella (Johnson) Loberg. Merlin was baptized into the Christian faith on May 17, 1925, at South New Hope Church. He attended grade school and High school in Amherst, WI. In 1943, knowing what he wanted to do, he enlisted in the Air Force where he was the aerial, belly gunner in a B-24 Liberator. Merlin served in WWII and when the war ended, Merlin went to school in Minnesota for Heating, Ventilating, Air Conditioning,and Refrigeration (HVAC/R). Merlin worked for Roe Refrigerationin Oshkosh for 36 years and was a hard worker providing for his family.

Merlin was united in marriage to Marilyn Rose Bobbe on June 2, 1951, and she preceded him in death on August 28, 2010. He was a lifelong member of First English Lutheran Church in Oshkosh.

Merlin enjoyed carpentry work, gardening, canning, snowmobiling, tinkering, fixing things, creating gadgets, camping, traveling, hunting, planting and cutting trees, and watching Packer games. He and Marilyn loved going to their happy places: thefamily cabin in Amherst and Explosion Lake in Townsend, WI. There, you would find them mowing, going on rides in the UTV, camping, enjoying food made over the open fire, drinking Old Fashions and beers, sitting around the bonfire, splitting wood, playing horseshoes, going on pontoon rides, coming up with some project for everyone to help him with and the list goes on. He never missed out on doing activities with family.

Merlin lived a fulfilling life as a devoted and loving son, friend, brother, husband, father, uncle, grandpa, and great grandpa.

Merlin is survived by his three children: Bruce (Cindy) Loberg of Winneconne, WI, Susan (Pat) Loberg-Aulwes of Greenville, WI, David (Kathy) Loberg of Berthoud, CO; seven grandchildren: Ashley (Dan) Marquardt, Britta (Travis) Wing, Sarah Loberg, Amy (Abraham) Payan, Lindsey (Fiancé, Justin Distel) Loberg, Megan (Andrew Tucker) Loberg, Johan Aulwes; four great-grandchildren: Cora and Keegan Marquardt, Audrey and Lukas Wing; and hissister, Lynette Emery. He was preceded in death by his parents, Johan and Luella Loberg; his loving wife Marilyn Loberg of 56 years; grandson, Cole Loberg; and brother, Lowell Loberg.

The funeral and celebration of eternal life will be held at First English Lutheran Church, 1013 Minnesota Street, Oshkosh, WI with the Rev. Timothy Greenwald officiating. Visitation will take place at the church on Friday, January 14 from 2-4 pm, service to follow with full military honors. Burial will take place on Saturday, January 15 at Nelsonville Lutheran Cemetery in Nelsonville, WI at 10:00 am. Friends and family are welcome to attend.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.
