Merritt M. Safford

Merritt M. Buster Safford Jr., age 81, of Oshkosh, died Wednesday October 20, 2010 at Park View Health Center. He was born January 23, 1929 to Merritt and Evenson Safford. He married Elly Hasse and she preceded him in death in 1975. He then married Ruth Merill Lipke in 1979.Buster worked for Universal Foundry for 25 years, and was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. Buster was a Special Olympics State Champion in the events of swimming, track, basketball, and volleyball. His hobbies included iceboating, race boats, hunting, fishing and going to stock car races and parades. Buster was an avid fan of the Wisconsin Badgers and the Green Bay Packers.He is survived by his wife Ruth, his children Michael Safford and Kim Dawn Safford, step-children Betty, Mary, Laverne, Louise, Rick, one sister Donna Safford, twenty-five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, two nephews and a niece. His special friends include caregiver Sherry Web, stock car buddy Dave Rodat, and boating world friend Jim Merten Jr. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Richard Merill.Funeral services for Buster will be held on Monday October 25, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the Konrad-Behlman Funeral Home-Eastside with Rev. Jeffrey Knoll officiating. Visitation will be held on Monday at the funeral home from 10:00 a.m. to the service time. Burial will be in Lake View Memorial Park.
