Reverend Merton H. Luebke age 77 died Friday, June 8, 2012 at St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay with his family present. Mert was born on March 19, 1935 in Appleton, the son of the late Louis and Clara (Hoffman) Luebke. On June 15, 1957 he was united in marriage to Barbara A. Blum, in Appleton.Mert graduated from Appleton High School in 1953. He graduated from Midland College- Fremont, Nebraska where he received his BA Degree in 1957. On May 13, 1960 he graduated from Northwestern Lutheran Theological Seminary where he received his Masters of Divinity Degree and was Ordained on May 18, 1960.Reverend Luebke was called by The Board of American Missions of the United Lutheran Church in America to develop a mission church on the Northeast side of Oshkosh. In May of 1961, St. Andrews Evangelical Lutheran church was organized and Pastor Luebke served that congregation until June of 1989. He was active in Big Brothers of Winnebago County, the Campus Ministry at the University of Wisconsin - Oshkosh and as one of the Oshkosh Police Department Chaplains. He later was employed at Muza Metal Products in Oshkosh, Wisconsin until he fully retired.Mert was known for his knowledge and abilities in the trades and his willingness to share his talents with others. Much of the time he was engaged in a project, often for a friend. His most extensive project was their summer cottage on Archibald Lake, which he renovated into a year-round home where he and Barbara enjoyed years of retirement. During his retirement, Mert volunteered as an ambulance driver for Townsend Fire and Rescue. He then received training, and served as an EMT. He was President of the Archibald Lake Association. Mert re-engaged in his old hobby of flying radio controlled airplanes. He was an active member of the Four Seasons Flying Club and also served as Treasurer. Mert is survived by his wife, Barbara, Townsend, WI; three children: Mark (Michelle) Luebke, Oshkosh, WI; Andrew (Kathleen) Luebke, Oshkosh, WI; Elizabeth (Bryan) Schilling, Wausau, WI; four grandchildren: Sara & Eric Schilling, Wausau, WI; Grace & Emily Luebke, Oshkosh, WI; a sister: Phyllis (Eugene) Callaway, Appleton, WI; a brother: Merlin (Betty) Luebke, Appleton, WI; a brother- in- law: Jim Yeakey, Shawano, WI; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Mert was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers and three sisters.The funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, June 15, 2012 at St. Andrews Evangelical Lutheran Church with Rev. Karen Jewell and Rev. Peter Martyn officiating. Visitation will be at the church from Noon until the time of service. Interment will be at Lake View Memorial Park on Saturday June 16, 2012 at 10:00 am. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be made to St. Andrews Evangelical Lutheran Church at 1100 East Murdock Avenue, Oshkosh, WI 54901, or to your charity of choice. Our family and friends were given an extraordinary gift sharing our lives with Merton Harvey Luebke. His example and guidance will be missed by all who loved him.Thanks to the staff at Community Memorial Hospital, Oconto Falls, St. Vincent Hospital, Green Bay and Unity Hospice for the care they extended to Mert and our family.
